It's mostly corporate greed. Their CEO and other high-ranking employees and board members make a fortune. They could have lower prices if they wanted to, and so could all the other companies. Doesn't help that most companies are part of monopolies, either.

This.

Covid saw soaring prices and when companies realized people would still pay (at the time), they never dropped the prices.

Omg one of the worst parts of working in retail was the higher ups constant insistence that “you have to beat LY!!” Like sometimes it’s ok to just stay consistent…at a certain point you simply can’t go any higher

I went to the French bakery and stood in line only to find out that a single croissant now costs $5.00

then I walked to McDonald's to get a McGriddle and it was also $5.00 so I walked back to the French bakery and stood in line again to get that $5.00 croissant

That's my justification for spending $$$ on good quality food. I might as well spend that $20 on something decent/organic/minimal chemicals versus going to a fast food place to spend almost that much.

My favorite bakery is just down the street from me, and their plain croissant is $5.50, the chocolate almond is $7.50, and my fav croissant isn't even on the menu because they only make a limited number of them every morning and they're always sold out by 11 am. It's the ham and Swiss cheese croissant and it's $8.50.

This place has always been more expensive than normal, but they made it thru Covid and we lost so many bakeries and restaurants during that time, I don't feel like I can complain too much.

I know fast food/food trucks at big events are going to be more expensive, but the past weekend at Calgary Expo I went to get a poutine and paid $18. $18!!! It was cheaper last year. Also there was a poutine on the menu for $30. Is there caviar in there or something??
