Honestly, I don't really know how I feel about Sakura either. It's a bit complicated for me because people seem to either love her or hate her, and I always end up feeling very lukewarm towards her.
Like, she has an interesting character concept, and in the early chapters I think she rounds out Team Seven well because it's useful to have someone who's on a more even keel emotionally than either Naruto or Sasuke is. (I think even her excessive squeeing over Sasuke is actually pretty even-keeled, because she's at an age where that's normal.) She also has a lot of potential in that she's the only main character to not come from some kind of epic bloodline. On the other hand, specifically because she's more low-key, it always feels like she's the least important member of Team Seven, and there's just something kind of . . . bland, I guess, about her? I don't know. There's something about the female characters in this manga. I never dislike them, but I can never bring myself to like them, either. Except for Konan and maybe Karin

I've just experienced an odd flutter of relief hearing that Sasuke came home. Apparently deep down, amidst at the stupid shit Kishi has dealt and all the WTF that is Sasuke, there's a part of me that remembers why I fell in love with all of these characters--the part that values and admires them and just wants them all to be really, truly, at peace someday. Ah, Sasuke. <3
Your mention of improvements to recent chapters makes me want to catch up, too... But I'm pretty sure I left off reading shortly after Pain died. I didn't even properly get to the zombies or the moon-stealing Madaras! Oi vey.

The recent chapters are really good. There are the Hokages (the First's reaction to the news about Tsunade being Hokage was hilarious) and the new Sannin team :D
