the url for spybot, s&d is: http://security.kolla.de/ and follow the links to download from there. however, before you run it, several quick recommendations:
1) close all the unneeded toolbars in ie.
2) when you do download it, go to the online section and run the "download updates" first. not all the mirrors are in sync with the latest updates.
3) if it is unable to remove something cause it's in use, go ahead and let it restart your computer.

post running, several suggestions:
1) panzy over to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and let it download all the updates. it may take 30 mins, but boy is it worth it.
2) update your virus checker (it should be doing this automatically, but hell, you never know)
3) if you're using windows xp, turn on the firewall (start, settings, control panels, network connections, right click the connection, properties, last tab).

okay, la?:)

I was having similar problems, so, under the urging of a geeky friend, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox.

Firefox is a different than IE. It looks strangely clean when compared to the high amounts of IE clutter. Plus, the Mozilla browser automatically blocks pop-ups and spy/adware.

By the way, I don't remember if I told you or not, but I added you to my Friend List.
