Even better news for my life plan: there's a study abroad acupuncture program that only takes 1.5-3 months in China, which is all day every day and should "leave one with enough knowledge to practice," and costa rica doesn't have licensing laws so I wouldn't need a degree from a US program. It sounds sketchier than it is, promisem. But now my only ( Read more... )

As a Licensed Acupuncturist, I will give you my two cents on this...
If you want to really learn Acupuncture, 3 months of watching someone do it is not the way. Acupuncture is a holistic medicine that is more than just point location. There is thousands of years of theory and practice behind Acupuncture, and to give your patients the best possible treatment, you need to know this. Why you choose the specific points for each treatment is just as important as point location. If you do not know where an imbalace is coming from, how can you treat it correctly? Yes it takes more time, but would you want someone with 300 hours training to do surgery on you or someone with 3000 hours training?
I hope you will take this into consideration, and good luck with your studies!

I absolutely agree. I wouldn't go into practice just out of this program, but I also didn't want to spend three years in the US studying it. Its not the time that's the problem, it's the place. With this option, I can study the theory where it originated, and then when I'm in Costa Rica I can continue studying it without the constraints of a US degree. Thanks though, you make great points!
