Title: You don’t belong with me [3/10]
Pairing: Jonghyun x girl!key(Gwiboon), platonic Minkey, 2min(girl!taemin) and quite a few others
Genre: Romance, Humor
Rating: PG
Summary: Gwiboon (also known as Key), is in every way the college’s reigning queen bee- the one that every girl hates but wishes to be.
Unfortunately, people like her don’t get the boy of their dreams (handsome, charming neighbor boy with his own rock band) because she’s just not his type; he needs to be with the devoted nerdy girl pining for him. Or is it?
A twist on the usual ‘nice nerdy girl gets boy’ theme!

2 Minho waited patiently at the side of the kerb, kicking the fire hydrant gently till the girl- Im Hyoshin or something; one of the art club girls?- finished yapping and gave him a mixed busybody-and-curiously-afraid-but-simpering expression and left them alone.
“Come on, I’ll walk you the rest of the way home.”
Taeyeon blinked as Minho placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. She looked around before looking at Minho again.
“Key-unni?”
“She had something important to do.”
He didn’t elaborate but Taeyeon could have sworn the man muttered ‘she has feelings too’ under his breath but it could have been a figment of her imagination.
They walked the downward slope together in silence. Taeyeon suspected Minho was annoyed over something but didn’t broach the topic; being preoccupied with her own thoughts.
“When did you move here?”
“How long have you been living in this area?”
They asked together precisely at the same moment- safe topic, awkward results. Minho smiled slightly; his previously aloof demeanour washing cleanly away.
“I asked first.” He teased.
Minho really was quite a pretty boy, Taeyeon thought, as the streetlights casted a sort of romantic glow on them. She flushed as Hyoshin’s words came back to her.
We think you should be cautious of Choi Minho- everyone knows he’s a player: he’s nice to every girl but dates them and dumps them. He only really belongs to the Queen diva bitch, I mean, haven’t you seen them together?
“Taeyeon-sshi?”
“A-ah. Sorry. I was spacing out.”
He smiled again.
“I just moved here last summer after graduation.” She replied hastily; remembering his original question.
Minho nodded like he already expected that answer.
“Most of the people at the college actually attended the same few schools in this district from childhood; but you didn’t look familiar so I asked.” He offered, noting her rather adorable confused expression.
Ah. Was that why the entire college seemed to speak of a long shared history together?
“So you’ve been living here all your life essentially?” Taeyeon asked in return.
“Pretty much.”
No wonder Key had also mentioned that she and Minho had been friends practically their whole lives.
“No wonder the entire school seems to know each other.” She mused.
Minho was silent for a second.
“I guess knowing is one thing but understanding is another altogether.”
He tipped his head down slightly. They were in front of her gate, Taeyeon realized with a start.
“I’ll see you in school tomorrow then? Take care.”
Minho ruffled her hair slightly and left.
It was almost a whole minute later that she realized she was staring at his retreating figure.
“What made our Gwiboonnie angry?”
Jonghyun had a good question. What was making her angry really? She thought, drying her shoulder length hair with a towel as she sat on the window sill slowly.
“I’m not sure myself.” She wrote truthfully and held the board up. Key looked in his direction and did a very obvious shrug. He smiled before looking down at his board and scribbling.
“I think I know?”
“You do?”
The man hesitated for a moment; his left hand lingering, poised above his board.
“You’re not so much angry as opposed to being upset.”
She wanted to retort in negative but the more she thought about it, Jonghyun might have had a point.
Key just smiled slightly- a bit bitter and resigned- before shrugging again.
Jonghyun frowned and scribbled,
“I know you best in the world, sweetheart.”
Yet you don’t know how I feel about you darling.
Key tried to shake melancholic thoughts away but his next words had her heart crumbling.
“Cheer up. I’d hug you right now if I could.”
She looked down at her whiteboard for the longest time, unsure about the response. When she finally looked up; Jonghyun was still seated at his window sill looking in her direction. Her heart skipped and she so badly wanted to write something that she had in her heart for such a long time now. A small chill ran down her spine.
Her mind furiously told her not to do it. Her heart told her otherwise. It was just four simple Hangeul characters; yet her hand refused to cooperate.
Instead she just offered him a smile and her hands made a heart. He grinned, the usual handsome cheesy one that she adored and made a heart back at her.
She sighed.
“I mean, god, she’s such a scheming two-faced bitch.”
Taeyeon flinched from the harsh words that left Hyoshin’s mouth; she’d never really thought the soft spoken girl was capable of such language. Hyoshin looked at her and whined,
“Taeyeon-ah. Why must you be in that club? Those people must treat you like dirt. Aish, just because they don’t look half bad and can move their hips, they think they’re all that. ”
She was about to answer in disagreement when she realized that they were more concerned about complaining about the club in general. Yeonmi, on her left, was dreamily staring into space but nodded every time the artist said something derogatory.
Taeyeon just spooned the kimchi fried rice into her mouth instead and kept quiet.
Were they really right? She thought idly. Technically, none of them had any reason to lie; they knew each other since years ago. But… it wasn’t possible; the way Key had spoken to her yesterday was unlikely to be faked. And really, her club members were nothing less than cordial with her.
She was puzzled at the way nothing seemed to fit.
Looking up and across the table she noticed the seniors from the next table (the rock band table) - Jonghyun and Jinki- looking a bit discomfited. Suyeon, whom the rest of the girls at Taeyeon’s table constantly ribbed for her ‘totally-obvious’ crush on Jonghyun, was shyly talking to the said man, but he seemed a little distracted as if he were thinking about something. She watched him and the council president exchange looks.
Suddenly he looked her way.
“…don’t you think, Taeyeon?”
Shit. She wasn’t paying any attention at all.
The whole tableful of girls looked at her and it even caught the attention of some of the next table who was looking with interest. Jonghyun, in particular, was studying her rather intensely, as if her response meant something.
Taeyeon chewed her lip.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t catch that.”
“Oh Taeyeonnie. Don’t you ever pay attention to what I say?”
She bowed her head in apology.
“I was saying, we all think that if you’re miserable in that place; maybe you should quit. Don’t let them boss you around. I’m sure Suyeon-unni can get you into the writing club.”
Suyeon looked mildly surprised at the mention of her name but smiled and nodded.
“I…”
Taeyeon was at a complete loss for words.
Her eyes darted around the table and it seemed as if everybody was just waiting for her to cave and nod. She locked eyes with Jonghyun who still had an intense expression.
He suddenly stood up from his table, which resulted in several heads turning to look and he walked away. Jinki got up and gave his usual Student Council smile-and-wave before disentangling himself from the bench and walking away swiftly as well, as if chasing after the other. Their sudden actions took away the previous intensity on Taeyeon as Eunji (petite girl from string ensemble) gushed dreamily,
“Jinki-oppa is so handsome~”
A couple more girls (a good half of the table really) agreed with that statement; it was true, the council president did have a certain sort of charm that went with the intellectual exterior. Taeyeon privately thought he wasn’t really her type though.
“Unfortunately the queen seems to have her eyes on him too. Ah! I don’t get why all the guys are such slaves for her.” Yeonmi grumbled.
“Speaking of her, what’s your decision, Taeyeon-ah?”
“I’ll… think about it.” She said, biting her lip. It sounded lame; weak even to her.
“They’re talking about me.”
Nicole looked up at Key who was wearing a hard-to-read expression and toying with her earrings.
“Don’t bother about them.” Minho just calmly said, chewing on a fishcake.
“I’m not bothered.”
He raised a brow.
Fuck, was she really so easy to read? Key thought furiously and just bopped Minho in the bicep instead.
“I don’t like the way they treat her.”
Minho sat in the chair opposite Onew’s in the council room. The president just sighed. This was the second time hearing this today- the first had him missing half his lunch. He had much to say; but perhaps in his position he had to be neutral. That was the social expectation, at very least. He disliked the social façade game they were playing but he had to join in the fray as well.
“They’re not actually doing anything to her.” Onew ventured instead.
The athlete just gave him a disbelieving expression instead and circled an error in the document he was half reading. There was no way Onew could say otherwise, their words were sometimes even meaner than anything he’d ever heard Key say- and that was saying a lot, considering he’d known her almost as long as Minho- and it sometimes affected him as well. It wasn’t easy listening to people speak ill of someone you knew well.
“There’s nothing I can do, Minho-ah.”
“I know. There’s nothing I can do either.”
They just looked at each other in similar resignation.
“Jonghyun almost lost his temper just now. He thinks the girls are nice but you know how he is when it’s about Key.”
“I think Jonghyun-hyung is a bit blind.” Minho deadpanned.
“Is she still… pining over Jjong?” Onew tested the word out, but it wasn’t quite correct.
A small smile unfurled across Minho’s face despite his mood.
“Key never pines and you know it.”
Onew gave a small laugh but it quickly turned a bit somber.
“Jjong seems to like Suyeon back though.”
“I know. Key knows. I think she’s working on it but from what I see, it’s not exactly working out well.”
“Why doesn’t she just confess to him then?”
Minho shrugged. Sometimes, he didn’t understand girls either.
“Pride I suppose. And the fact that she thinks he doesn’t like her and it’d affect their relationship or something.”
Onew looked very confused for a moment.
“But he does. He loves her in fact; you know that.”
Minho clarified,
“She thinks that Jonghyun-hyung loves her in the same way we do.”
Ah, like best friends.
Onew didn’t disagree with Minho. They did love the girl since years ago, no doubt about that. To them, she was the sister they didn’t have, a mother hen, a caring platonic girl friend that wasn’t whiny and demanding(okay, maybe sometimes a bit).
“So you’re still playing the ‘perfect couple’ skit with her?”
“Key needs my help and I’ve never been one to deny her anything.” He shrugged; carelessly underlining something.
“How does the agreement go again?”
“When she gets over Jjong or I find my dream girl…”
Apparently, anyway. Key had stated the conditions and he very candidly agreed.
“Of which both aren’t very likely?” Onew finished.
Minho hesitated. Onew stared at him and let out a low whistle which almost turned into a shriek as he very nearly stapled his own hand.
A/N: Uh. I apologize for the shortness of the chapter and the excessive dialogue. On the upside, I think I finally have a grip on this fic! The next chapter will definitely be longer. also 사랑해요-is four characters, isn’t it?
