...is all it took for my life to change completely.
I was thinking about my students’ homework, and what I’d make for dinner. The weather was beautiful, and things were finally looking up for Kanan and me.
Then I arrived home.
At first, I thought it was a break-in; there was furniture overturned everywhere. When I called for her, she didn’t respond. The house and the yard were deserted.
I remember searching with growing panic. I remember the neighbors’ callous explanation. Their eyes, never meeting mine, seemed to say: she’s worthless.
That’s when the fog of madness descended.
