By the third day, she's starting to feel more like herself. She's getting used to the rhythm of motherhood, trying to sleep when the baby's sleeping, waking up to feed her. She's tired and she's pale, and Paul keeps taking her pulse and frowning. She lost a lot of blood, apparently. She at least persuaded him to let Ianto take her home, so she' ( Read more... )

Alright, three days is plenty. Especially after everything being a bit touch and go. She sat Sam down and as serious a talk as possible with a two year old about being quiet and gentle and as an effect, he's latched onto her, eyes wide and solemn as she pushes the door open. "Hey," Kate whispers, in case Cadi is asleep. "Can we come in?"

"Oh, hey," says Charlie with a really bright smile, shifting Cadi's weight a little in her arms. "Hey, Katie. Hey, Sam." She waves with her free hand. "C'mon. Come in."

"Oh, she's so tiny," Kate breathes, rushing right over to the bed. "God, look at that hair. How are you feeling?"

Sam, for his part, finds this all very strange and his Auntie Charlie looks sick and is in bed. He pops his thumb in his mouth and gives her a worried look.

"She was a little early," says Charlie, grinning up at Kate as she comes over. "Just a week or so; Paul says that it barely made a difference."

She shifts Cadi in her arms so that sam can see her face. "Come here, Sam. It's okay. Come meet Cadi."

I knocked on the door with my elbow, as I had my hands full with a pie. "Hey," I said, my voice kept low in case the baby was sleeping. "How's the new mother?"

"Sleepy," says Charlie, cradling the top of Cadi's head as she shifted her weight in her arms and beamed up at Polly as she comes through the door.

"But I'm doin' fine."

"Oh," I said softly upon seeing Cadi. "Oh, she's beautiful." I came over, practically tiptoeing, and reached out to touch baby and mother gently.

"Thankyou, honey," says Charlie, all but glowing with pride as she shifts her sleeping daughter in her arms. "Come on. Sit. I mean, she's gorgeous and all, but she's not much of a conversationalist, just yet."

Jack had been making a nuisance of himself, he was sure of it. Today he'd brought food from the compound, just so Ianto wouldn't have to worry about it.

"Hey, Charlie," he said softly, noting she was awake for the moment. "HOw are you feeling today?"

"Hey, Jack," says Charlie, dropping a kiss onto the top of Cadi's head as he comes through the door. "Is that dinner I smell, you lovely man?"

"It is. I thought you two might like something fresh from the kitchen. I promise I didn't cook it," he said with a sweet smile. "How are you feeling, Charlie? Better than yesterday?"

"Fantastic," says Charlie, shifting Cadi's weight a little. "As tired as I've ever been and I'm sure I look like hell, but I'm good, Jack. I'm really, really good."

"If you're feeding right now," says Geoffrey softly from the doorway, "I'm not coming in. There are some things I'm just not meant to see."

"She just ate," says Charle, grinning. She shifts her weight and turns Cadi a little. "No naked females in her, Geoffrey. You're fine."

"It's not naked females that's the problem, it's naked you," says Geoffrey, staying quiet as he comes to her side. He knows enough not to wake a sleeping newborn. He knows a lot of things about children he didn't know, or just didn't care about, before the island. "How are you feeling?"

"Well, I'm not naked either," says Charlie, grinning. She holds one hand out to him as he walks over. She nods.

"Achey, but fine. We're doin' fine."
