After his humiliating thrashing from Dr. Weir, Rodney McKay did the last thing he really wanted to do- he went to find John Sheppard and Radek Zalenka. He knew he needed to at least make the effort of apologizing to both men, since he needed their continued support. And that was something he’d never verbally admit to. He found John first, and as hard as it was, he managed some sort of an apology. Feeling encouraged from his encounter with John, Rodney then went off in search of Radek.

He went to the lab, figuring that was where Radek would be. He was right, seeing the other scientist at his station. All work seemed to have stopped when Rodney stepped foot in the lab, no one said a word as they stopped working. Radek was the first to move, getting to his feet immediately.

Rodney could only watch as Radek stormed out of the lab before he’d been able to say a word, though there was no way he could miss just how angry the diminutive Czech was, and that bothered him more than he ever thought possible. He felt someone staring at him, so just raised his eyes just enough to cause the other person to look away quickly.

“What?” he snapped venomously, not caring to look at whoever’s head he’d just taken.

Then he stormed out of the lab, having his vaguely hopeful feeling from Sheppard completely knocked out of him by Zalenka. There was no way he wanted to spend another minute in the lab, or anywhere else in public, since he knew that the stories of his fall from grace would spread like a wildfire doused with gasoline. He stalked to his quarters, almost forgetting that he couldn’t get away from everyone there since he didn’t live alone.

He found Evan sitting on the sofa with file folders spread around him. Rodney noticed a yellow highlighter within easy reach, and saw that Evan had the end of a pen between his teeth. Rodney didn’t move, he only stood there waiting for Evan to notice him. And he didn’t have to wait long.

“You just gonna stand there all night or you coming in?” Evan asked, setting the pen next to the highlighter.

“I was debating the merits of staying versus the merits of packing and bag and going back to my old quarters for a few days,” Rodney answered, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

“Running away isn’t going to help matters,” Evan noted, and Rodney rolled his eyes.

“Spoken like a true…” he began, but stopped when he caught sight of Evan’s glare.

“Be careful how you finish that sentence,” Evan warned. “I know you’re upset, but I haven’t done anything.”

“I know! I’m the one that did!”

Evan growled in frustration, but Rodney hadn’t heard it. Then Evan stood up, walked around the coffee table, and stood in front of Rodney. With both hands, Evan grabbed Rodney by the back of neck, and there was no mistaking the feeling of Rodney’s body stiffening with anxiety. But what Rodney hadn’t expected was the bruising kiss that Evan gave him.

“You aren’t going anywhere,” Evan told him, his blue eyes narrowed.

Rodney swallowed hard and could only nod. Then Evan slid his hands down Rodney’s arms, and took him by the hand. Silently, Evan led the way to the sofa, where he made room for Rodney.

“What are you up to?” Rodney asked, curious as to why Evan had so much work spread around. He was the one known for bringing work home.

Evan shrugged. “Doesn’t matter where I do this. And here is more comfortable than my office.”

Rodney nodded, it was the same reason why he brought the work home that he could. They talked idly for a little while, but it didn’t take long for Evan to steer the conversation in the direction of the Arcturus project disaster. Rodney had seen this coming, but knew better than to try and avoid it.

But talk was soon replaced by yelling, and Rodney was no moving all over the room while Evan could only watched from the sofa. Rodney always paced when he was upset, and Evan wasn’t going to get in his way.

“I should’ve listened…I was lucky. I was lucky that the solar system was uninhabited. Radek kept telling me, but what did I do? I accused him of professional jealousy,” Rodney ranted with a snort at the end.

“Look, you’re right, you were lucky. You were lucky that there weren’t any people around and that Sheppard was there to bail your ass out,” Evan said, his tone low and even in contrast to Rodney’s.

Rodney glared pointedly, but Evan didn’t back down. Then Rodney sighed, his arms crossed over his chest.

“I blew up five-sixths of a solar system,” Rodney said.

“Yeah Rodney, you fucked up,” Evan said pointedly, not missing the wounded look on Rodney’s face. “You aren’t infallible. You make mistakes. Welcome to the human race. Just promise me you’ll learn from this.”

A kind of stare-off ensued, neither back down. And for the first time that evening, Rodney took the time to read Evan like the open book he could be.

“You’re angry.” Statement, not question from Rodney.

“Yes, I’m angry.”

“Then why are you still here?”

“Because I care about you. I care more than I’m angry.”

“How can you even stand me?” Rodney asked, looking from Evan to gaze out the window at nothing in particular.

“I could try listing the reasons, but it won’t matter. You can yell, scream…say whatever you want… I’m not going anywhere right now. Part of being in a relationship is helping the other with a crisis, you’ve helped me when I’ve lost men…when my father died…”

“This is going above and beyond…”

“There is no above and beyond, Rodney. We just are, and that’s how it is.”

A kind of realization dawned on Rodney, and it was the first time that he was able to touch on how much Evan really cared for him. Rodney mentally shook that thought and corrected himself.

He’d touched on how much Evan really loved him.
