The details of the case hadn’t really hit anyone until after the debrief back at Quantico. At the end, no one moved immediately, and no one was able to directly look at Morgan either. Morgan saw this and was confused by it since he didn’t know what he’d done to deserve that kind of treatment.

“How could you do that?” Garcia finally asked, staring right at Morgan.

“Do what?” he asked, though he had an idea of what she’d meant.

“You know what I mean!” she answered sharply, snapping her gum at the end for effect.

“Look, I have a good idea of what she was going through, and there was no way I was going to leave her alone.”

All of a sudden, five sets of eyes were staring at him, and that made him shift in his seat uncomfortably. He was keenly aware that they were expecting him to just tell his tale, but it was one that he wasn’t ready to tell yet. So he sat in the same silence as the others, hoping that someone would bail him out soon. But his hopes were dashed as the silence lingered and the battle of wills continued. When the silence became overwhelming, he slowly rose from his chair and wordlessly walked out of the room, leaving the others to stare after him.

Everyone knew where he was going, but Garcia was the only one who followed after a few minutes. She found him exactly where she expected to- on a balcony overlooking the training field. He was leaning against the railing with his head down and his back toward her. She took a cautious step forward, some miscellaneous dirt crackling underneath her foot. The sound was enough for Derek’s body to stiffen slightly, and he slightly turned his head toward her.

“Garcia?”

“Who else, darling?”

“I couldn’t do it,” he said as she joined him.

“Do what?” she asked, putting her arm around his.

“Tell them.”

“You can tell me…”

“I can’t even think about it. About the one reason why I left the squad.”

“Hotch and Gideon already know then,” she surmised, thinking the reason was in his file.

But he shook his head. “All they know is that I left the squad to go under, but they don’t know why I left.”

“Why did you leave?”

“Let’s just say I was more used to defusing bombs for other people than needing someone to defuse one for me.”

Garcia turned to face him, wide-eyed and mouth agape. It took a few seconds of mental processing before she could form, “What?”

Derek nodded slowly, his dark eyes seemed even darker as the memory began flashing through his mind. But Garcia soon realized he wasn’t going to share without prompting, so she asked him about it.

“Not now…I just can’t…not here.”

She nodded slowly, her heavy heart pounding in her chest as she wondered what could’ve happened that would cause her prince to react in such a manner. So she wrapped her arms around one of his and rested her head against his shoulder, and they stood in silence. Garcia was content to stand there as long as Derek wanted her to, so she didn’t move until he did.

They were about to reenter the building when he paused, turned to her and leaned down to kiss her cheek.

“Thanks, babydoll,” he said just before he opened the door for her.

“For what?” she asked as she stepped through.

With only a wink for an answer, she walked next to him as they made their way back to the conference room where they found the others still sitting. With the door shut, Garcia shook her head to answer both Gideon’s and Hotch’s unanswered questions as they looked at her. Realizing that they weren’t going to get any backstories from Derek then, the debriefing moved forward. Once finished, Reid was the first out the door with Gideon and JJ behind him while Garcia, Hotch and Derek stayed in the conference room.

“Garcia, would you give us a few minutes please?” Hotch asked of the tech, who only looked at Derek before nodding.

“You know where to find me,” Garcia told Derek before leaving.

“Morgan, sit down,” Hotch ordered, to which Derek immediately obeyed.

“Look, Hotch…” he began, but a raised hand silenced him.

“Morgan, just hear me out, okay?”

Derek nodded, and waited for Hotch to say his piece. Hotch shifted in his seat, then looked directly at Derek.

“I know you aren’t going to tell me about it, just know that I’ll listen…we all will…whenever you’re ready.”

“Thanks, Hotch. Maybe one day I’ll fill you in.”

“Just don’t let it happen again. When I tell you to step aside, you step aside.”

Derek flashed him one of his patented grins, and replied, “Sure thing.”

And with that, he was out of Hotch’s office. It was an uneventful rest of the day for the team, and Derek was about to leave when he heard a welcoming female voice calling his name.

“Hey gorgeous,” he said as Garcia walked over to him.

“Talking to yourself again, are we?” she asked, smiling.

“No, you,” he replied. “I’m headed out. You wanna grab some dinner?”

“That is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a while,” Garcia replied. “I just need my jacket.”

Once Garcia was ready, they headed out of the building. Since Derek knew where he wanted to go, he led the way. In the parking lot, Derek opened the door for Garcia, who gracefully stepped out.

“How do you know about this place?” Garcia asked as the headed for the door.

“From a friend,” Derek answered, then opened the door.

As Garcia stepped in, he placed a hand on the small of her back, not moving it until they were both well inside. Garcia looked around as Derek got them a table.

“This place is beautiful,” she whispered as they walked through the dining room to their table.

“I like it,” he agreed, helping her with her coat and hanging both hers and his up.

“Whoever said chivalry is dead hasn’t met you,” she smiled when he sat down across from her.

“What can I say, I just want to be your knight in shining armor.”

Dinner was a casual affair, the conversation purposefully kept light. It wasn’t until they were in the parking lot again that it got serious.

“I want to tell you,” Derek said so suddenly that Garcia had to take a moment to realize what he was talking about.

“Your place or mine?” she asked, slipping an arm around Derek’s.

“Mine okay?”

“Fine with me. And I already know the way.”

Even though she knew the way, Garcia still followed Derek, parking in the space next to his. It was a silent walk into his building with only the sounds of their footsteps accenting their entrance. In Derek’s apartment, he got out a couple glasses and filled them so they’d have something to drink.

“So, what’s on your sexy mind?” Garcia asked with a wry smile as Derek handed her a drink and sat down.

“Getting right to the point, huh?” Derek said, answering her question with one of his own.

“I want to know,” Garcia pointedly answered, then took a sip of her drink.

Derek put his drink aside, then leaned back in the chair. With a deep breath, he moved so he was leaning forward, his elbows on his knees.

“I thought I knew it all. Seems I don’t learn from my own mistakes,” he began, stifling the memory of his admission to Reid so long ago. “I walked straight into a trap, and I was the only one who couldn’t see that. I tripped a timer, and it was up to the others on the team to disarm it in time. I was lucky that they were so damn good.”

“What happened after?” Garcia asked.

“The next day the chief found my resignation on his desk. He tried to talk me out of it, but there was no way that was going to happen. So I started on my trek to the BAU by going under for a while.”

“Why don’t you want the others to know?” Garcia asked.

“We all have our reasons, I have mine.”

“Derek…” Garcia breathed, putting her drink down. Then she stood up, went over to the chair Derek was sitting in and sat on the arm, putting her arm around Derek’s shoulders. Kissing his head, she stated, “They’d understand.”

“I knew what Brazier was going through, sitting in that car not being able to do a damned thing about the bomb that was threatening her life. If I’d have left that warehouse to disarm the bomb myself, I would’ve set it off, killing everyone nearby. I had to sit inside, in the dark, wondering if I would be walking out or…”

“Don’t finish that,” Garcia ordered, putting a finger over his lips. “You made it out, and everyone went home that night.”

She removed her finger in order to fully embrace Derek, holding him tightly. He only leaned his head against her, and so they sat for a few minutes. With a final squeeze, Garcia got up.

“Thanks, sweetness,” Derek finally said.

Then with a patented Garcia smile, she shook her head and said, “You, the light of my life, are the picture of tall, dark, handsome, and mysterious.”

Derek laughed, “But you can read me like an open book.”

“Maybe…” she coyly said, “Well, I need my beauty sleep, so that means I’m heading home.”

“Sweet dreams,” Derek said.

“Always,” Garcia smiled as she left.
