Bill frowned as he woke to the mingling wails of twins. It’d been like that all night and though it hurt his ears very much, he felt sorry for them. Mum said they had ear aches, and Bill remembered when he had had one and it had hurt a lot. Even worse than his ears did now, listening to them screaming for hours.

“Ssssh, Percy, it’ll be okay, Mummy’s got you, love,” he heard his mum say as she walked past his room. “I know your tummy hurts.”

With Dad at work tonight - he’d heard Dad tell Mum through the Floo that they were going on a raid tonight, which sounded very cool to Bill though Mum had seemed worried about it - he knew that as the oldest, he was the man of the house. He was almost nine years old now, and when his Mum had had the twins, his Grandma Prewett had told him that he should help her do things as often as he could. Now that she was going to have another baby, and Bill was hoping he’d be named Ronald after his favorite character in the Martin Miggs the Mad Muggle books, he thought that he should help out now. She sounded awfully busy with Percy, and the twins were still crying.

So pushing back the covers, he shoved his feet into his slippers and crept to the door. Glancing over at Charlie, who had gotten turned around at some point and now had his head where his feet were supposed to go, Bill stopped as he saw that Charlie was using his blanket for a pillow. He didn’t want Charlie getting sick too so he grabbed the blanket from his bed and laid it over his brother.

Charlie sighed in his sleep, his thumb falling from his mouth.

Bill hoped Charlie didn’t have to get his teeth straightened when they grew up. Maggie Hayes from town had always sucked her thumb and now she had those Muggle brace things and she looked like she had a colander in her mouth. He didn’t want people to make fun of Charlie like they did Maggie. His parents would be very mad if he had to beat people up, even if the reason was good. Uncle Gideon and Uncle Fabian would think it was brilliant though, even if they would pretend to be stern in front of Mum.

He grinned at that and walked to the door, closing it quietly, though it squeaked a bit. Pausing and listening carefully, he breathed a sigh of relief when it didn’t catch his mother’s attention. His nose wrinkled as he heard sounds from the bathroom that sounded suspiciously like someone being sick. Gross!

Tiptoeing past the closed door, he eased open the one to the twins’ room. Their crying stopped briefly as they looked over to see who it was, starting up again as they saw it wasn’t their mummy.

“Ssssh,” Bill said, shutting the door with a click. The dragon nightlight flared it’s nostrils as he walked by, the faint light from its mouth helping him to avoid the toys cluttered on the floor.

The twins had just gotten big boy beds last week, but one was empty, George having left his to join Fred. Their pajama-clad feet had kicked the covers off and they cuddled together in the middle of the mattress.

“Sssh, Freddie, don’t cry,” Bill said as he reached the bed and tried to tug the covers up. “Georgie, you’re hurting Freddie’s ears when you do that.”

After a moment, he had gotten the blanket untangled, though he didn’t know where the sheet was, and had pulled it over them. Perching on the edge of the bed, he tried to remember what Mum did when he was sick. He didn’t think the twins would like him to sing, and all he could remember was the dirty limerick Uncle Fabian had taught him, so he did the next best thing.

Reaching out, he pushed Fred’s fringe off his forehead with his fingers and then did the same with George. Their hair was sticky - he thought that Mum must not have gotten all the treacle out from where they’d been mashing it in their hair after dinner.

“It’ll be all right,” he said softly. “You just need to sleep. It’ll hurt less tomorrow morning and then you’ll take your medicine like Mummy says and you’ll feel even better.”

Fred and George looked at him with wide eyes, their crying tapering off, their freckled cheeks wet with tears. Tugging on the blanket, he used them to carefully wipe their cheeks. It was better than using the cuff of his nightshirt anyway. He’d found it underneath his bed and it hadn’t been washed in ages - Charlie had thought the dust bunnies on it looked like dragons blowing smoke, but Bill thought they looked like garden gnomes. They’d saved one on top of their dresser and were going to try to catch a gnome in the morning to see who was right.

“Biwwy,” Fred whined, scooting away from George, his little chubby hand patting the empty space between them.

Bill frowned. Sometimes Mum held him when he wasn’t feeling good, so it would probably work with the twins too.

“All right,” he said. He stared hard at the bed, trying to figure out how to get in without stepping on George. Finally, he pulled back the covers and crawled up the middle. He kicked Fred and nearly lay down on George’s arm, but after a bit of wriggling, the twins had cuddled into his sides.

He patted their backs, trying to murmur comforting words, like Mum did. After a few minutes, he yawned, unable to stop himself. This big brother thing was tiring sometimes, he thought as he closed his eyes sleepily.

He heard his Mum taking Percy back to his room. How did she do it? There were five of them - six once the baby was born. He could barely handle two at once and Mum seemed just fine with them all most of the time. Mum must be the best Mum in the entire world to do it so good.

Bill took a deep breath, and began to move now that they were quieted. Charlie might worry if he woke up and Bill wasn’t there, and he didn’t want Charlie to do that. Fred whimpered a bit, his little fist curling by his ear as he pouted. George blearily opened his eyes and seeing Fred’s pose, did the same, snuggling closer to Bill.

Maybe he’d just lay here until the twins were really sleeping and then he’d go back to his room.

He was fast asleep when Molly Weasley peaked in, a soft smile on her lips as she saw the three boys snuggled together on the bed.
