"Parents"
“I’m not sure about having children,” Elizabeth said.
“Is that a general policy statement or has someone offered … you know ?”
“Oh, no -- just an observation,” she replied.
“Why not ?”
“It’s the responsibility thing - I have enough trouble trying to keep myself out of trouble. Imagine looking after children.”
“You could start with one and see how that went.”
“But if it goes badly, then you’ve ruined a child’s life. And if one goes well, who’s to say the next one -- ?”
“If everyone thought like that - ”
“I know - we’d be heading for extinction.” She laughed and then said: “But it’s a decision that’s down to me, and I think I’m making the right one. For me, at least.”
There was a short pause, and then Elizabeth asked: “What about you ?”
“What do you mean ?”
“Children ? You ?”
A shake of the head: “No.”
“Not now or not ever ?”
“Ever, I think. Other people’s are nice enough, but at least you can give them back. When you have to take them home with you … ”
“Won’t you be lonely ?”
“Won’t you ?”
Elizabeth considered the point: “Not so long as I have you.”
