Dean watched from the doorway as Lisa sorted through the vials of fertility medication. Every night for ten nights, he'd watch her mix liquid and powder into syringes and inject them into her stomach. He didn't think she knew he was there.
As always, when the ten days wore on, her side effects from the medication would get worse. By the tenth night, her hands would be shaking so bad that she had a hard time filling the needle and injecting the serum.
Then there was the long agonizing wait to see if their prayers were answered. When they weren't, she'd head back to the clinic and they'd start the daily injections once again.
She didn't think he heard her when she'd cry into her pillow at night. It had taken all he had to not wrap her in his arms and kiss those bad feelings away. But, she was an independent woman. Since she was hiding her tears, he had the grace to give her the privacy she wanted and pretended to sleep.
His heart broke for her each time she sat down at the kitchen table with medicine used to trick her body into doing what they wanted. He'd told her that he considered Ben his son, biology or not. Since Ben's biological father had been gone for years, Ben had no qualms about accepting Dean as a father figure.
This new baby started out as something they both wanted. When the doctors forced them to look at possibilities for treatment, Dean told Lisa that he'd support any decision she made. Yes, he'd like a baby but he was happy and content with just Ben, too.
So, night after night, between the shots and the nausea and abdominal pain, he tried to be a good husband. Because, in the end, there was nothing more that he could do.
