Plink!
"Aha!" Maka yelled happily, pumping her fists from her seat on the couch. "Got one!"
Soul rolled his eyes. "Yeah, after what? An hour?"
Maka punched him hard in arm. "Shut up, Soul."
It was just another lazy Sunday in Death City: No missions, no current crises to lose sleep over. And because neither of them had anything better to do, Soul snored half the day away as his technician pored over a book her father had bought her in celebration of making her partner a Death Scythe. An hour or two later, she got hungry, and after rummaging in their poorly-stocked refrigerator for a moment, carried a bag of bright red cherries back to the sofa.
Maka had sat back down and munched away at the fruit, but was stopped adruptly by the rock-hard pit. Extracting the offending object from her molars, she stared discontently at the tin wastebasket all the way on the other side of the room. She had just then made herself comfortable.
Deciding to leave it to chance, she chucked the tiny pit at it. It cling!ed against the side of the trash can, landing on the floor. Maka had glared at it for a moment while she chewed for another pit, throwing it again and missing. Again. She scowled.
Eventually, the repetitive cling!ing roused Soul from his daytime nap, and soon enough, he too joined in on the not-so-productive sport.
"Your turn," Maka reminded him, thrusting another cherry his way. Instead of pulling it off the stem, however, her partner promptly popped the entire fruit into his mouth. For a moment, his tongue poked into each cheek, over and over.
She raised an eyebrow when he opened his mouth wide, revealing the cherry, unharmed, just behind his razor-sharp teeth. The rough stem was tied in a perfect, even knot, smack dab in the middle.
Maka gave him a deadpan look. "Kidd would be proud."
Soul removed the cherry from his mouth and scowled at her, red eyes gleaming. "Bet you can't do it."
Turning to face her, he watched closely as an indignant Maka shoved another bright red fruit past her lips, stem and all. Her tongue poked around hasitly inside her closed mouth for a few mintues before her pink lips twisted into a knowing smile.
Soul blinked, unconciously leaning forward. "Let's see it."
Maka opened her mouth proudly.
He blinked again before bursting into racous laughter. His partner pulled the red cherry from her mouth and staring at it, turning just as crimson. The stem was twisted in a fashion that was best described as corkscrew-like. Embarrassed, Maka threw it at him, effectively hitting him in the eye and stopping his loud guffaws.
"Ow," Soul said, rubbing his eye and looking at her quizically. "Oh, come on, Makaa. It took me forever to figure it out. Not bad for your first try."
Maka gave him a flustered glare before turning herself away from him and reopening her encyclopedia-sized book. Soul heaved a frustrated sigh.
"Makaa."
She didn't even blink.
"Oi."
Nothing.
"Maka."
This wasn't working.
Soul glared at the back of her head, the corner of his mouth curling upwards in distaste. Sure, even he could admit to himself that his partner was rather attractive when she was embarrassed, but he hated it when she ignored him like this. Bitterly, he mentally compared himself to a lonely puppy in need of affection, but he shook that train of thought out of his head roughly.
Then, he had an idea.
His half-frown curved into a smirk as he moved closer to her. "Makaa."
No answer. Not unexpected.
"You want me to teach you?"
This got her attention: She twitched, turning her head slightly to look at him out of the corner of her eye.
"'Cause I will."
Maka turned around. "What're you getting at--"
Before she could say anymore, Soul forced another whole cherry onto her tongue and slanted his mouth over hers. His tongue tangled with hers, fighting for dominance, both of their eyes closed, his arms around her shoulders and hers resting on the nape of his neck.
When they pulled apart for air, Soul linked his tongue around the stem and pulled it from Maka's brusied lips, having tied it in yet another perfect knot. They both stared at it for a moment, Maka's face glowing, a fire engine red.
"And that," he smirked at her, "Is how it's done."
And then, just for good measure, he kissed her again, tasting the remnants of cherry flavor in her mouth.
