Every morning since he had started to work for the Ministry of Magic, Percy combs his hair in three familiar and precise strokes that place every strand in its fitting place.
He likes things to be exactly where they are supposed to be, and hair is not supposed to drape your shoulders like Bill’s or worse, have a faint smell of dragon dung like Charlie’s.
A rushed but thorough hygiene session always precedes his Flooing to the Ministry. It is usually done very early in the morning so he may have the time to prepare the important case files that would be tackled that day.
Percy takes pride at attaining goals even before Mr. Fudge has the chance to sip on his morning tea. His brothers have mocked him by implying that he was overzealous. His parents questioned his appointment.
Percy lifted his nose at those assumptions, but the sting is still biting. How could someone be overzealous? If it means just doing what is right, maybe he is.
What is right is to be a competent, hard-working employee with a willingness to climb the career ladder. What is right is to want more responsibilities, to be respected.
Ambition. This makes all the difference in the world.
However, Percy is not as willing to Floo in this morning. He is waiting for an owl from Ron, an owl that could confirm that someone in this irrational family of his has finally understood what is his priority. Ron must know for sure that staying close to Harry leads to danger.
Ginny almost died. Percy knows how much Ron care for Ginny and he hopes he made it clear how much Ron means to him. He hopes he will find an ally in him. Security should be the priority.
He stares at his reflection with a dubious look and he thinks again about that spell he read about two years ago, before leaving Hogwarts. He knows he wrote it down somewhere in his school stuff. He often thinks about it these days.
He eyes his red hair.
It could be easy.
His hair screams Weasley before he can even open his mouth and show the world that he is able to say something wise and sensible, unlike those nitwits Fred and George. His hair gets him some biting remarks by smirking employees of the Ministry.
One of them said he looked exactly like his father at that age with that red hair and those glasses. He grew up thinking his father was well respected and influential in his area of expertise.
He understood quickly when he entered the Ministry that people that truly matter believed his father was an eccentric middle-aged wizard with a caseload nobody wanted.
He understands how his hair can be deceptive. Percy believes he is different. He knows he is.
This spell could solve everything.
But he hesitates.
