Paul sat on the sofa, watching as Ian’s two children thrashed each other with the fluffy new cushions Victoria had just bought. He wondered whether if he’d had kids they would have had pillow fights with him, wrestled with him, played with him. That could have been fun. Ian watched his teenagers, sipping his tea contentedly. He noticed the somewhat wistful expression Paul had on his face. “You alright?”
“Yeah. Y’know. You just sometimes regret things. Wish things were different.”
Ian put a warm hand on his shoulder. “This is your family too, Merton. Don’t ever forget it.”
Paul nodded.
