They had pulled into New York a few hours ago and checked into the hotel. Haley had excused herself, claming that she was going to find somewhere to eat, but she ended up on the roof of the hotel. She would frequently sit up on the roof of each hotel they visited, lost in the memories she had with Nathan.
He was a bigger part of her life than she ever wanted to admit, and she knew that she did the most cowardly thing she could ever do. She left her husband, the love of her life, when she got scared and all for some dumb career.
Being so high up, and in the northern part of America, meant that the night was going to be chilly. She hadn’t anticipated staying up there for very long, but as she glanced at her watch, the glowing numbers reading 11:35, she regretted not bringing her jacket.
She wrapped her arms tighter around herself, the thin black t-shirt not helping to keep her warm. She rubbed her bare arms lightly, her eyes scanning the horizon of the city again. She let out a soft breath, watching the heat connect to the cold in a white puff.
The lights illuminated the city, causing the stars to curl into the blue black sky they sat in, but all Haley could see was Nathan’s face and the plastic Cracker Jack bracelet he had given her sitting on the end table.
The door opened softly before closing again, stopped by the large rock Haley had placed in front of the door frame so that she wouldn’t be locked out. She kept her back to the intruder, a scowl coming to her face. Couldn’t anyone leave her alone?
He made his way over to her, lowering his gangly body down beside her. “Fantasizing about the Keller?” he asked the smirk on his face evident in his tone.
“Just the opposite, actually,” she replied.
He gave a laugh as he shook his head. “If you say so.”
Haley took hold of the wedding band on her finger and pulled it past the bottom knuckle, twirling the metal around and around. It was something, she’d noticed, she did frequently when Chris was around.
She pushed the ring back into its rightful place and rubbed her arms again, trying to get rid of the goose bumps that stayed on her flesh. Noticing this, Chris shrugged out of his leather jacket and slid it over Haley’s shoulders.
“Don’t say Chris Keller never gave you anything.”
