Warnings: None.
Notes: I had planned to use this prompt for an angsty war piece. It ended up as a character study. Funny how these things work out.

Percy, Harry thinks, is in a constant state of war.

To Percy, the affectionate bustle of the Burrow is a battleground of every man for himself, winner-take-all chaos. Better Head Boy than Bill, better marks than Charlie, better son than the twins. He wants, needs to be better, it is the only way for him to earn their love, and he will fight tooth and nail to do it. Percy spends every waking moment (including those that rightfully should be filled by sleep) working- his work is his fight; his quill, his weapon. And he does not know the meaning of surrender.

Percy's loyalties clash. To whom does he owe his allegiance, to the family that raised him (in spite of their differences), or to the Ministry that can feed his desire for greatness, can loosen the chokehold of ambition and want? He cannot have both, but can do without neither.

Percy's desires fight with his morals. It is wrong, he knows it is wrong, to lust after the boy his little sister has fallen in love with. And if the lusting is wrong, then certainly so is falling for him. And worst of all, the stolen summer nights in Percy's room under the sinful sanctuary of ill-used Silencing Charms. Percy knows he shouldn't, of course he knows he shouldn't.

But this is a war that desire always wins.
