For as long as she could remember, Narcissa had felt incomplete.

When she was young and naïve, Narcissa thought that the she felt incomplete because she was missing her soulmate. Her mother would tell her that she was only one half of a whole, and she needed a man to complete her. She was so certain she had found that in Lucius, in his lingering touches and wonderful way with words, but the feeling followed her into marriage, much as she tried to push it away.

When she was pregnant, Narcissa wanted so desperately to feel complete. How could she still feel so unfinished when she had a new life, a wonderful, little baby boy, slowly growing inside of her? As she held her newborn son against her breast, Lucius' arm a comforting weight on her shoulders, she assured herself that she was finished, finally complete.

When the Aurors took her husband, and the Dark Lord took her son, Narcissa was empty. She cried into her pillow at night, and spent her days looking for ways to fix the mess that her family had become. The Ministry invaded the house almost weekly, supposedly searching for Dark Arts artifacts, and tore apart everything in their path in the name of 'justice'. After they had taken everything of value from the manor, they decided to take that, too, leaving Narcissa out in the cold.

When Severus accepted her into his home on Spinner's End, with a warning that she could not attempt to contact her husband or son, Narcissa was filled with gratitude. She struggled at first, finding it difficult to overcome her snobbish Malfoy ways, but eventually she found herself feeling at home in the rather run-down, little house. She cooked and cleaned without assistance, and if Severus noticed most of what she created was burnt or tasted terrible, he never mentioned it. She put away what few extravagant robes she still owned, and switched to sensible, black ones. She even took to mending the tears in her clothing instead of tossing them away at the slightest flaw, determined to make what little money they had go a long way.

When Lucius received the Dementor's Kiss, Narcissa was devastated. She returned home, for she truly considered it her home now, and ran straight to Severus. He held her close as she cried, letting her sob out all of her hurt on his shoulder. She cried for what must have been hours, but he didn't push her away. She expected him to tell her 'no' when she turned her tear-stained face upwards and touched her lips to his, but he didn't. Instead, he kissed her back, and touched her softly, banishing the loneliness that consumed her. When she begged him to take her to bed, make her forget her pain, he didn't hesitate.

It wasn't until Severus placed a kiss on her forehead the next morning, not saying a word but communicating so much with that small gesture, that Narcissa finally felt fulfilled. As she smiled up at him, wrapping her arm more tightly about his waist, she thought that perhaps her mother had been right. Perhaps she had been longing for the other half she needed to complete her all this while, she just hadn't found it until now. Now, even with her only son a fugitive, and her husband worse than dead, she felt truly satisfied. Complete at last.
