She watched helplessly as the butterfly fluttered furiously in the jar. As its black-tipped cerulean blue wings beat against the glass she wished she could unscrew the lid, punched with five holes for air, and let the poor creature go.
But there were big things in store for this butterfly. It was one of one hundred set to be released at her wedding. Her arranged wedding. Her parents had picked out her husband for her and she didn't even know his name. "All the noble witches and wizards have arranged marriages." But Lisa was different. She knew she could never grow to love a man she wouldn't meet until the wedding. She was in love with . . . well, she wasn't in love with anyone, but it certainly wasn't going to be him.
"There's no way out for me," she told the beautiful insect. She held the jar tightly and walked to the window, the train of her ivory wedding gown curling behind her around the room. "But there is for you." She flung open the window and opened the jar.
She watched helplessly as the butterfly fluttered away. She cried silent tears, knowing she would never know the freedom she had granted it. She was trapped forever in the life her parents had chosen.
