Cedric jumped to his left as the droplet of water splashed onto the ground.  He laughed, as he saw that mud had splattered his new pants.  He always laughed when that happened.

Harry, on the other hand, looked concerned.  His brow furrowed, his eyebrows coming together in that cute way that they did.  Harry always noticed first, that’s why was looking at him, deciding what to do.

Colin saw that it had been Harry that had actually pushed Cedric out of the way.   Colin looked right at his fellow Gryffindor, as a drip of water fell to the ground, narrowly missing Harry.

He watched on as the two boys came together once more.  They always looked so happy, Cedric ruffling Harry’s hair and the younger boy grinning from ear to ear.

This time Cedric wasn’t quick enough, the liquid hit him right on the shoulder spinning him around.  Many years on a broom chasing a Snitch had taught him something about grace, and he pirouetted like the most graceful dancer Colin had ever seen.  His wavy brown hair spilling over his forehead as he came to a halt.  Harry laughed and brushed some of the water from his shoulder.  Cedric smiled grabbed Harry by the waste and pulled him toward him.

Colin couldn’t hear the music, but he knew it was there, for a second he closed his eyes and he could remember so clearly.

“Colin, Take Harry’s picture.” Cedric asked.

Colin stepped out into the courtyard, snow was falling, covering everything in a blanket of white.  His feet left small black holes where he stepped, preceded by a crunching sound as the snow was crushed to nothing.

“No, Cedric.  I don’t like getting my photo taken.” Harry tried to explain.

“Don’t listen to him Colin, of course he does,” said Cedric, “Harry, you’ve seen Colin’s work, he takes excellent portraits.  This is the Yule Ball, you won’t get to have another one of these, ever.  You should have some sort of keepsake, beside trodden toes.”

Colin watched the grin on Harry’s face light up the night.  Cedric began to laugh as he took Harry by the waist.

“Cedric, what are you doing?” Harry stammered.

“Harry, you dance at a ball, isn’t that right, Colin?” Cedric asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Ye..yes.” Colin replied, pulling the camera from his overcoat pocket.

“Yeah, but not with me.” Harry grumbled, pulling away from the older boy.

“Fine.  Colin, come here.” Cedric gestured.

“Me?” Colin stood rooted to the spot, too terrified to move in case he tripped and made a fool of himself.

“Yes, I saw you inside before, you’re quite good.” Cedric bounded across the yard, careful not to slip on the icy ground.

Colin tried to back peddle, but there was no way he could ever be quick enough.  The next thing he knew Cedric had him in his grasp, his hand sliding into Colin’s and another around his back.  Colin gulped, no boy had ever held him like this before, it wasn’t like dancing with a girl.  Cedric twirled him around and they sped off across the cobblestones to the sound of Les Adieux.  The night air became electric, and Colin felt as if his feet left the ground.  He looked at Cedric’s face, the older boy smiled and gave him a wink.  Colin had thought the dancing was making him feel out of breath, but he knew that wasn’t the truth.  His heart felt like it wanted to jump out his chest.  He gripped Cedric’s hand tighter and for an instant he took the lead.  His feet kicked the snow up in little plumes of white powder.  As they trailed thorough the cool night air, Colin hoped this moment would last forever.

“Colin, you can take the picture now, if you want?” Harry cried out from somewhere in the darkness.

He felt Cedric’s grip loosen as they came to a halt on the far side of the courtyard.  His hand slipped from Cedric’s and dropped to his pocket, searching for the camera again.  Then he felt Cedric’s other hand, still around the small of his back, rubbing gently.

“You do dance rather well, Colin” Cedric said, in a hushed tone.

The fingers slid up his back and over his nape and into his ruffled hair.  They slid between his locks and then back down and over his skin, holding on the back of his neck for just a moment. Rubbing gently.  So very gently.

“Cedric?” he whispered.

“If you wouldn’t mind.  I’d like to dance with you again, sometime.” Cedric murmured.

Colin’s mouth went dry.  His heart, which had been threatening to burst from his chest, went into double time.  He tried to talk, but nothing came out, his lips moved, but there was no sound.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Cedric smiled the same smile that melted all the girls hearts, “Let’s go take Harry’s picture.”

They ran back to where Harry stood shivering.

“If you two are done, I’d like to go back inside.” Harry moaned.

“Potter, just because you can’t dance well, doesn’t mean that you can’t dance.”

Cedric grabbed Harry again and was about to take off, when Colin interrupted them.

“Wait, I’ll just get the picture.” he fished the camera out finally and took the photograph.

Colin felt a drip of water run down his nose and realised if he kept crying that he would ruin the photograph altogether.  Cedric now had the same worried look on his face as Harry, and they were both looking directly at him.  He sniffled and wiped his eyes, clearing the tears before they did the boys anymore damage.  He remembered so clearly that night.  Cedric grasped Harry and this time instead of doing a waltz, he took off in some sort of quickstep, completely out of time with the music, music that only Colin could hear.  Harry burst out laughing and Cedric joined him.  Colin looked at the two boys in the photo, prancing and laughing and cavorting about in the snow filled night.  Those were good times.  Colin remembered, a kind heart, a brave soul and a lost chance.
