When Lucius failed to obtain the prophecy for the Dark Lord, Azkaban wasn't the only thing he dreaded. Sure, it definitely tarnished your soul, affected your view on the world, but he knew he would be released when the Dark Lord brought back the Dementors as allies.
No, it was the wrath of his master that Lucius dreaded the most.
Fortunately, he didn't have to endure the Cruciatus curse from his dear sister-in-law, and he just knew how much she would relish that oppurtunity, but there were worse things. Lucius suffered far more than physically.
The Dark Lord revels, you see, in breaking people. He made Lucius little more than a boy - a boy with no wand - and he didn't pay him the same sort of favour He may have in the past. Because what Lucius did, though in essence seems a small failure, was unforgivable.
The Dark Lord was so close, so close, but not anymore. And so Lucius must suffer, and it will be the last time he is trusted with something so important.
