Summary: Neville finally gets his Hogwarts letter.
Neville was halfway through a large bowl of cornflakes when the owl came.
His Gran, a firm believer in fibre, had a habit of filling his bowl to the brim before even adding milk. Neville made a face as he took yet another bite. The flakes at the bottom were getting soggy and tasteless.
A beak pecked at the window. Neville looked up and gasped. A large barn owl was sitting on the outer sill, a parchment envelope clutched in its talons. He grinned and yelled up the stairs. “GRAN! GRAN! There’s an owl!”
He ran for the window and tugged it open just as his Gran entered the kitchen. She could move incredibly fast for an old lady. “Neville, what have I told you about letting those birds into the House?”
“But it’s a Hogwarts owl, Gran!” Neville exclaimed, bouncing as he showed her the envelope. “Look!”
“Hogwarts…” Augusta breathed. “Well, open it, boy, go on!”
Neville almost tore the letter as he ripped open the envelope. He went suddenly silent and his eyes narrowed in concentration as he read. Dear Mr. Longbottom, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…
“Yes,” he gasped. “It says yes!”
“Well, of course it does!” Augusta huffed. “What else would it say?”
Neville thought that was saying a bit much, considering his Gran had kept warning him about not getting his hopes up for school too much. He’d accidentally heard - well, eavesdropped on - a conversation between her and her friend Mrs Tullomandy about organising alternative schooling… just in case.
“I got in,” he said in near disbelief. “I’m going to Hogwarts.”
Augusta cleared her throat. When he looked up at her, he saw a look on her face he couldn’t remember ever seeing before. “Gran?”
She looked at him for a long moment. “Well done, boy,” she said eventually.
Neville beamed.
