"Almost got it. Right. . . UGH! Bugger!" Tonks groaned, putting her head in her hands.
"Are you alright in there, love?" came the voice of her boyfriend through her bedroom door.
Quickly she stood and ran to the door, making sure it was locked. "Yes!" she called. "I'm just fine, Remus!"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes!" she called back. "I'll be out in a minute!"
Turning her back on the door, she stared down at her enemy, a length of scarlet ribbon decorating Remus' Christmas gift. She could have let the girl in the store wrap it. But no. She thought she'd play the role of domestic diva and do it herself.
The result had been three hours of cursing, a roll of wasted tape, and four paper cuts. And that was only wrapping the small gift. All that was left was tying the ribbon into a bow, an impossible task. She ruined half of the roll within half an hour, twisting, shredding, and ripping it.
The other half was lying next to the golden wrapped box, as if daring her to try again. She should have just waved her wand and gotten it over with in an instant, but Nymphadora Tonks, talented Auror and member of the Order of the Phoenix, wasn't about to be bested by a roll of ribbon.
But alas, even Aurors can't win all of the time. So when she emerged half an hour later, she was carrying Remus' ribbonless gift in one hand, a tangled mass of scarlet ribbon in the other. "I tried," she said with a shrug.
Remus just smiled and kissed her cheek. "It's perfect."
