Sirius winked at his friends as he stood up and meandered down to the end of the Gryffindor table. “Why hello Marlene. How are you doing today? You look simply wonderful today. Would you like to accompany on the next Hogsmeade Trip? I promise I’m a good date.” He leaned against the table with a casual elegance not many teenage boys are able to master.
Marlene’s cheeks blushed a subtle pink. “No, I would not, but thank you for the invitation. I only go out with gents who sing opera.” She turned back to the table and giggled along with her classmates.
No one was prepared for what happened next. The Marauders watched Sirius with a look of pure amusement. He was down on one knee, in the middle of the Great Hall, singing to Marlene McKinnon at the top of his lungs.
“Voi che sapete
Che cosa è amor
Donne vedete
S'io l'ho nel cor
Donne vedete
S'io l'ho nel cor
Quello ch'io provo
Vi ri diro
E per me nuovo
Capir nol so”
Sirius’s right arm was held out, reaching for Marlene’s hand, while his left hand clutched at his chest. His Italian pronunciation and singing voice weren’t bad, but weren’t very good either.
James laughed as Marlene’s face turned bright red and she stormed off, out of the Great Hall and into the stairwell. “Tough luck, mate. Maybe next time,” James said, slapping Sirius on the back when he had returned to his seat.
“Why thank you Mr. Black, that was a wonderful rendition of that aria from Marriage of Figaro, however would you please keep your singing confined to the privacy of your room? I’m sure the rest of your classmates don’t share your enthusiasm for opera.” Professor McGonagall glared down at him through her spectacles, but her lips showed the slightest hint of a smile.
“Yes ma’am. I simply wanted to prove to Marlene that not all the boys in this school were uncultured.” Sirius flashed the professor his signature smile and chuckled.
“Yes, well.” Professor McGonagall turned and walked back up the aisle to her seat.
Sirius’ grin stayed plastered to his face as he turned back to his friends. “So, how about Hogsmeade this weekend?”
