The sun woke Lily up the first day of summer vacation. She sighed, happy to be in her own bed after the long tests of OWLs. She stretched and just lay in her bed, looking out at the blue sky. She thought about what she was going to do as she rolled over to see what time it was. She sat straight up as she saw that it was nearly noon. She didn't think that she slept half the day away. She got up and quickly dressed before running down the stairs. She stopped in the kitchen and saw a note on the fridge. She scanned it to see what message her parents left.
Lily - Went to the shops early this morning. Won't be back until around dinner time. Have fun on your first day of vacation!
Love, mum and dad
Lily smiled and got herself a bowl of cereal for her breakfast-lunch. Considering the good weather, she knew it was insane to just stay inside and read or something. She could save that for when there were summer storms. She cleaned up her dishes and got together to go outside. She grabbed the keys and locked the door behind her. She wasn't sure where she was going and soon her feet found her walking a familiar path. It was going towards the wooded area in town and she decided to just go with her subconscious. She found herself on a wooden path that she noticed was new to her but used greatly by the people who lived there. She smiled and continued on her way, listening to the birds in the trees around the path. She attempted some bird calls back but only laughed at herself as she realized how stupid she sounded. As she came to the end of the path, she stopped short as she realized where she was. She was at the swings, where she first met Severus. She could also see someone there. She turned to go back but then turned back again. Curiosity got the better of her as she quickly walked over to see who it was. Her eyes narrowed as she saw Severus sitting on a swing. She muttered to herself and turned to leave but she stepped on a twig, snapping it. "Damnit," she whispered.
Severus turned his head and saw Lily. "Lily," he says.
"Don't," Lily said sharply. "You have no right to talk to me. You don't. I wanted a peaceful day and this is where I end up!"
"No, that's fine. Don't give me a chance to try to make up. That seems to be more like what you want to do," Severus countered.
"Do you even understand what you did?!" Lily asked. "Do you get that you embarrassed me and that you called me the worst thing ever? Do you know how much that hurt?! No! You don't! Because you don't care and you just wanted to be cool!" She was yelling at him but that couldn't stop the tears that were coming down her cheeks. "Damn you, Severus Snape!"
Severus just stared at her, watching her start to cry. He got up from the swing and came over to her. He hugged her, not caring that she started to hit him a bit until she gave up and just hug him back. He let her cry into his chest, being quiet as he just hugged her. When she stopped crying, he started to talk. "I never meant to hurt you," he whispered. "I was angry and embarrassed myself. I wanted nothing more than to hide away from what Potter did to me. That anger was misguided and went to you. I'm sorry. I don't think I can ever say that I'm sorry enough. And if you don't want to accept my apology, I'll live with it. There will be a hole in my life that I will never be able to fill, but I'll try and live."
Lily sniffled and listened to him. She went over what happened that day and nodded a small yes. She knew that he was angry but the fact that she tried to help him - that stuck out in her mind. "But Severus," she whispered. "I was trying to help you."
"And I didn't want any help," Severus whispered. "And I didn't realize that you were trying to help until later. I just wanted to hex anything that came into my path, mostly James, but you were there too. And I'm sorry."
Lily nodded a yes and sniffled again. "I ruined your shirt," she whispered.
"It is fine," Severus said as he looked down at her.
Lily looked up at him and smiled. "Thank you," she whispered.
Severus smiled as well before he leaned down and softly kissed her. He thought that she was just going to push him away but he was surprised when she kissed back. He kept the kiss until they had to breathe and he kept her close after that. "Does that mean that you've forgiven me?" He whispered.
"A bit," Lily whispered with a smile. "How about this - let's both change and then you can take me to lunch."
Severus' face brightened even more at that. "Alright," he said. "I'll be at your house in an hour?"
"That works for me," Lily said as she kissed Severus' cheek before she turned to go back the way she came. She was glad that her subconscious led her back to the place where she first met her best friend. Where the pathway ended, she had found peace and forgiveness - it was the best way to start vacation ever and the lunch to come was just the icing on the cake.
