[Background]
Captain Usopp is the leader of the Usopp Pirates, a mighty crew of 90,000 pirates who follow their captain with unfailing loyalty. His bounty is unheard of amongst even the most powerful pirates, and the World Government refuses to even acknowledge his existance due to fear of retribution. All in all, it is highly likely that Usopp will become the Pirate King, as there is no other competition that can even remotely compete with him.

...Only not really.

Usopp is, in fact, a pirate- But not the most powerful pirate in the world, or even on his crew (Which he is not the captain of). Indeed, he's probably one of the weaker members of the Straw Hat crew as far as sheer physical strength goes; despite this, he is a highly skilled marksman and sniper, and can be incredibly useful when he's not hiding in a barrel or something.

Usopp was born on Syrup Island, an island in the East Blue ocean. His father was a marksman named Yasopp, who later became a member of the Red-Haired Pirates- Yasopp's leaving took a great toll on Usopp's mother, Banchina, and she fell ill. Attempting to encourage her recovery, Usopp developed a habit of lying- He would rush to his mother's side daily, shouting that pirates had docked on the island and his father had returned for them and would take them out to sea with him. His mother, knowing full well that Yasopp, as a pirate, was unlikely to return for years to come, simply humored her son and allowed him to tell her these stories. As time went on, however, her condition worsened, and she eventually passed away. Either as a coping mechanism, or simply because he'd already gotten into the habit of it, Usopp began running down the main road in the town daily, screaming about the arrival of pirates; the townspeople would continuously chase him, throwing things at him, but eventually became used to his antics, even using his daily lies as an alarm clock of sorts. And so life moved on.

Several years later, Usopp met and befriended a sickly girl named Kaya, who lived in a mansion at the edge of town. Kaya, an orphan, was attended by two butlers, named Merry and Klahadore; due to her illness, she was forced to stay in bed most of the time with only her butlers for company, a lonely existance. Usopp took charge of the situation (Because he's Usopp) and snuck onto the grounds of the manor, climbing the tree outside of Kaya's window; the two quickly became friends, and Usopp began visiting her daily. He would regale her with his tales of bravery, none of which had actually happened- his knack for lying became a huge benefit to him, as Kaya loved his stories and his company. Merry, the senior of the two butlers and Kaya's personal attendant, was relatively unconcerned by the situation; while he was never terribly pleased with Usopp sneaking onto the grounds, he was cheering up Kaya, after all, so he left them alone for the most part. Klahadore, however, hated Usopp rather a lot- Whenever he caught the long-nose sneaking in or climbing the walls, he would bodily remove him from the grounds. Despite these setbacks, Usopp continued to sneak in and spin his yarns for the young woman. (Behind the scenes commentary: I almost wrote that as "spin his yams". This was an entirely necessary thing for me to point out, I assure you.)

All of these things continued for several years. Usopp's continued lies irritated (but not too much) the town, and Kaya continued to be charmed by his stories. One day, though, everything changed! Some pirates actually arrived. Usopp understandably freaked out- After all, they weren't the pirates his father belonged to, and possibly dangerous!- So he designed his ~master plan~... gathering his fake "pirate crew", several young boys he called the Usopp Pirates, to meet them. It turned out, though, that the arriving pirates were the Straw Hat crew, and relatively friendly. They hung out for a while- Luffy had met Yasopp due to their mutual knowing of Shanks- and then PLOT TWIST!

Klahadore- Remember him?- Revealed himself to be the famous Captain Kuro, the Pirate of a Thousand Plans. Thought to have died years ago, he secretly had faked his death and was masquerading as a butler in order to rid himself of his infamous name as a pirate and live a peaceful life. To complete this plan, however, he would need to have money- And the easiest way to do this was to take it from someone already rich... someone like Kaya. His plan to become close to her and be added to her will failed due to various reasons, so he initiated his secondary plan- Forcing her to add him to the will with his crewmember Jango the Hypnotist's powers and then having her die by whatever means necessary. Usopp (And the Straw Hat Pirates) discovered this plan and decided that stopping it was an absolute necessity, so Usopp went to warn the townspeople... But due to the years of lying, in a "Boy Who Cried Wolf"-style twist, none of the townspeople believed him. So it was up to him, and him alone! ...Well, him and the three members of the Straw Hat crew and his own group of "pirates" that the little boys composed. Eventually, through a series of battles and cunning tricks, they succeeded, and Usopp decided he needed to set out on his own. Finding a small boat, he loaded his stuff onto it... Before Luffy told him to stop being an idiot and join the Straw Hat Pirates instead! Which Usopp did, as the Back-Up Captain. Back-Up Captain. Seriously. And so they set off on their new boat, the Going Merry, a caravel given to them by Merry. Despite his wanting to be "back-up captain", Usopp quickly took on the roles of the crew's marksman/sniper and handyman, also doing random odd jobs such as drawing the crew's new flag when Luffy's artistic skills completely fucking sucked.

Many adventures ensued, resulting in their picking up plenty of new crew members and Usopp's dreams taking hold of him- His desire to meet his father, a powerful pirate, and be useful to the rest of the crew, he determined that his absolute goal was to become a great warrior of the sea- a powerful marksman, and a great pirate. This was further shaped by their meeting two giants, powerful pirate captains named Dorry and Brogy from the warrior's island of Elbaf. The might and courage of these giants encouraged him along as they continued on their journeys, which brought them to many locales- A frozen kingdom, a desert continent, and an entire ocean in the sky... These were just among them.

Eventually, the adventures began to take a toll on the Going Merry, and Luffy made the decision to get a new boat. Usopp's attachment to the boat, as well as his own self-doubts about his power- After all, he was the weakest member of the crew compared to the monstrously powerful fighters, and Luffy was obviously getting rid of weaker members like the Going Merry- led him to leave the crew after a duel with Luffy. Immediately after, the rest of the crew set off to rescue Nico Robin, a fellow member, from the world government. Usopp, wanting to assist them without revealing himself, hid himself behind a flimsy mask. Like... a very flimsy mask that barely hides his face. Going by the name "Sogeking" ("Sogeki" is Japanese for "Sniper", so "Sogeking" is a portmanteau of that and "king"), he assisted the crew, fooling no one except for the naive Luffy and Chopper. Eventually, after the events of the Enies Lobby arc, he rejoined the crew.

After several more adventures- And the gaining of both a new boat, the Thousand Sunny, and two new crew members- the Straw Hats ended up on the Sabaody Archipelago. While there, the crew was attacked by the Shichibukai known as Bartholomew Kuma, who used his powers to send the crew flying faster than the speed of sound... And Usopp passed out during this flight, ending up in Somarium. It all ties together, really!!

[Personality]
The quickest and easiest way to describe Usopp is a single word- "Cowardly". His primary response to anything big, powerful, or scary is to run away; he refuses to engage in combat unless absolutely necessary; he's even gone so far as to make up various fake diseases (Such as "Don't-Want-To-Go-Onto-That-Island-Disease") in order to avoid getting into any dangerous situations. He's usually happy to help, provided he can do it from a distance- He is a sniper, after all, so that's his preferred range.

Should the situation require it, Usopp is indeed capable of conquering his fears and doing what needs to be done- It's always rather obvious that he doesn't want to, though, since his knees are usually shaking while he does whatever. In addition, should he truly feel strongly about something, his fears completely fall away and everything becomes about the battle- This is seen when fighting Luffy, where despite his knowledge of the other man's frightening power he fights at full strength with no hesitation.

Another core aspect of Usopp's personality is his compulsive lying. Due to his father's having left when he was young, he found it necessary to concoct stories about pirates coming to cheer up his mother- after this, the habit continued, and he took to telling tall tales about his own travels. This continues even now, with the tales of Captain Usopp's mighty journies- he mostly uses these to make himself seem far more brave than he actually is, but he also uses it to fake out his opponents (Such as with his Usopp Golden Pound Hammer, which he says weighs ten tons but is actually a gigantic balloon).

Recently Usopp's personality has taken another strange turn- that turn being the development of Sogeking. Originally used as a way to hide his helping of the crew during the Enies Lobby events, Sogeking has almost taken on an entire different personality in his head- Usopp's known to argue with him in his head before wearing the mask. Sogeking is suave, brave, and a master tactician- All aspects of Usopp that are buried underneath his own self-doubt and fears.

Overall, Usopp is fiercely loyal to Luffy and the rest of the crew, and a brave warrior underneath his negative layers- He may run away, but he always comes back.

[Specialties/Abilities]
Usopp is a master marksman. As mentioned in Sogeking's theme song (100 shots, 100 hits, lu lu la la lu~) he never misses, every shot hitting its mark. His skills were even further improved by the development of Kabuto, a gigantic slingshot with much more firing power- Using this he can make and land shots at a distance of over ten miles against the wind, an incredible feat even for the greatest snipers.

The majority of his attacks involve firing various things out of his slingshot; these range from lead balls to miniature bombs to shuriken to balls of tabasco sauce to gigantic flaming spheres that transform into a phoenix in the air. (No. Really.) He also uses various other weaponry; he carries hammers and rubber-bands for close-quarters fighting, as well as a powerful tool known as an Impact Dial, a rare type of seashell from the White Sea in the sky that can absorb physical damage and fire it back with exactly the same amount of force whenever the user chooses.

Usopp is also a tactical genius. While usually this doesn't matter, due to the nature of his fighting style (And just the nature of combat in general, as you can't usually pick your battlefield), it is made very apparent when he fights Luffy; he rigs the field entirely to his advantage, covering it in caltrops and filling the air with gas in order to cause a massive explosion later. When given the chance to figure out how someone fights, he's very good at manipulating what he knows to his advantage, usually to great effect.

In addition, he is a great craftsman, capable of building incredible weapons and tools- Amongst his greatest achievements is the Climatact, a baton made for Nami that can control the weather. Alongside this he's developed hundreds of various weapons for himself that have various effects when shot.

[Affection] Do what you want but he'll probably run.
[Fighting] Again, Usopp will run. Sogeking'll probably fight back and then run. If you piss him off enough, though, he will do his best to kick your ass.
