Beta: tinx_r knows the combination to the vault, I'm convinced.

Cody's bent over the table in the salon and Nick's nipping his way up Cody's spine, his hands pinning Cody's wrists, one knee pushing his thighs apart, spreading him open more efficiently. Cody hides a smile against the tabletop. He knows just how to get Nick where he wants him.

Cody had started with an innocent question. "Did you really have to hang that guy over the side of a speeding Ferrari?"

But from the look on Nick's face, Cody knew he'd just scored a direct hit. That was the look Nick got when he needed to unload, needed to lose all the anger and hurt that had come loose from the dark places inside him. It was the look that let Cody know it was time to bring Nick home; helping him in a way that Nick would never ask for but Cody knew how much he needed.

"Cody, the guy was dirty. Not just dirty, he helped Stephanie kill two people."

"Nick--"

"No, you listen to me. That guy was helping Stephanie frame Murray. And in case you haven't noticed, Murray's my friend. Our friend. He's more family than half the people related to me by blood and--"

"Nick--"

"I can't stand it, Cody! I can't! That gallery guy and Stephanie see Murray, harmless, geeky little Murray, decide they're going to kill a guy and pin it on him? No way! Not on my watch!"

Nick stared at him, standing in the middle of the room breathing hard, fully focused and intense, pointing one finger at Cody's chest. Cody smirked and decided to push it. Shoving his hands in the pockets of his slacks, he sidestepped Nick's finger and got in close.

"Murray, huh?"

Nick was nonplussed for a moment, and that was what Cody liked best: his partner getting so worked up, so protective, all his energy focused on defense, keeping safe what's his. And that included Cody.

Outside the gates to Kamal's estate, he'd felt it in Nick's kiss more than in the words of his warning. "If I don't see your face back here in ten minutes..." Which translated was, Cody Allen, don't you think about getting hurt on me. He'd felt it in Nick's fingers, hard and grasping round the back of his neck as they kissed goodbye, the look in Nick's eyes a warning and a promise. Don't you dare.

This evening though, all Cody could think about was the ridge of muscle at the base of Nick's stomach, how he loved to feel it tense and move under his fingers, his tongue. He'd stepped closer, hands on hips, sweating in the thick cotton sweater. "You didn't think he'd tell us any other way? I can be pretty convincing, you know."

"Like you were with the Gossip Queen? You two make quite a pair. What, do you know each other from the yacht club?"

Cody flushed and took a step back. "Don't."

Nick pressed the advantage, coming after him. "I noticed you changed before the visit."

Cody smiled, knowing where this was heading after all. "What, this old thing?" He turned to head out of the room, but Nick's arm was there, pulling him back, pulling roughly on the sweater, and as Cody turned to get a foothold, trying to get a hand in somewhere he heard the ripping of a seam and didn't even care as long as Nick's arms were around him, his stomach pressed against Cody's own. The sweater fell to the floor and was forgotten as Nick pushed him up against the wall, his tongue gentle and searching, even as his hands were questing, pushing. Dominant.

And right now Cody's glad that Murray's off at the bail bondsman's and the door's locked, because he wants Nick so much; protective Nick, the one who loves him hard and rough, sobbing his need into the back of Cody's neck, hands tight on Cody's hips, pulling him close. Cody closes his eyes and rocks against his partner, attention focused on where one of Nick's thumbs is digging into his back.

This is the only way Cody knows to bring Nick home when the fire burns out of control and he has to let his dark side out, using it the best way he can, keeping them safe, cared for, loved. Nick needs to take this at least as much as Cody needs to give it, a way to burn off the demons that pursue them, their way home.

Cody drops his head onto the table, moaning into his partner's thrusts.

He'll always be the rock Nick can break his fear against. When they sleep tonight, Nick's arms will be soft and pliant, his kisses light, his touch gentle.

But that is not now.

Right now Nick's nearly out of control, given over to the fear and rage that take him sometimes, overwhelming who he is, who he wants to be for them. Nick straightens up and Cody's left bent and vulnerable and near the edge. "Nick..." he murmurs throatily.

"I gotcha, babe," comes the muttered answer. Cody feels the tempo slow and knows Nick's close, just like he is.

"Oh yes, Cody, yes," Nick whispers. "Come on."

He always does what Nick tells him to.
