Summary: End of Act 1, Elphaba reflecting on her relationship with Galinda and why she knows she'll say no
All she had to do was say yes. It was such a simple word. So simple that a person didn't even have to say it. All they had to do was nod. Elphaba held her breath, willing Galinda to do just that. All she needed was the slightest incline of her friend's head and they could do this. Together. Take on any wizard, fly to the farthest star. They could do anything, everything, nothing and more, if Galinda would just say yes. All she had to do was nod.
Yet Elphaba knew. She knew before the that head shook the wrong way, ringlet curls shaking with the gesture. She'd known even before she'd asked. Just as she couldn't stay, couldn't apologize to the Wizard and stand by his side once more, just as she had to fly, Elphaba knew that her best friend would not come with her. They'd begun on separate paths and only now did Elphaba see that what she thought was two paths becoming one was really nothing more than two paths running parallel for a spell. Now, as they'd begun, those paths were diverging once more.
Already her side began to grow cold, so wickedly cold knowing that no longer would she have that pink at her side to make the green look good. She was on her path and she would stay true to it. No one, not even Galinda, could bring her off that road that she knew now she'd been on her entire life. She'd never changed her way, life had merely twisted down to meet her feet on the path. And now, now that she was cold and angry and knew what she must do, now her feet were leaving that path. Leaving it for good.
The sky would form a new path, and Elphaba would go on. But not alone.
