Yusuke sat up groggily, blinking away traces of sleep. His eyes met nothing but the pitch darkness of the room, and he instantly bristled in confusion. He couldn't remember where he was, vague slivers of dreams his only recognition of the night.
Someone grumbled in annoyance, and he felt a light squeeze on his waist. He jumped, startled. His first reaction would be to get away from whatever was grabbing him, but his mind was too bogged down to react that way. He looked down in that general direction but could see nothing.
So instead he reached down and touched the mystery foe. His fingers came in contact with soft skin and long tresses of hair.
The previous day's events came flooding back to him at once. That wasn't a youkai attacking him in his sleep. It was Keiko.
He was safe, back in Ningenkai for the first time in three years. His shoulders slumped and he let himself relax. She let out another discontented sigh, no doubt aggravated from all his wiggling. She'd decided to use his lap as a pillow, though how she'd managed to get in that position was unknown.
A cheeky smile spread across Yusuke's lips. "You'd better not drool on me."
Of course she didn't reply to him, which made it all the more amusing. Had she been awake he would have sucked those words right back in his mouth.
He rested his hand on her forehead, brushing her bangs back in an soft gesture. Normally he wouldn't do such a thing, but the moment lured him into it and he couldn't stop himself.
Yusuke felt guilty at leaving her for years, not being able to see her face all those months. She was his best friend...well, more than that now apparently, but he should have been there for her. She had to fight back the loneliness when he was gone. Keiko was strong though, and she beat it out with no problems.
When in Makai he tried to push her to the back of his mind, but the talk of Raizen's past had brought her straight to the surface again. The Mazoku had sacrificed so much to be with the lady doctor, making her the only person who he truly thought of that way. More or less Yusuke found himself walking in his ancestors footsteps when it came to relationships.
His reunion with Keiko had caused an explosion of emotions. Yusuke missed her, she missed him, and all the hurtful affects of his absence poured out into love.
"Yusuke..." she murmured.
"Don't worry, I'm here Kei. I'm not going anywhere."
