“What are you talking about?”
Hiro sighed down at the sidewalk and tried to shift slightly so that Shuichi’s arms weren’t completely cutting off the path of air to his windpipe. Shuichi’s added weight was making him hunch over, and he had the horrible feeling that he was going to lose his balance and topple over and that would not be pretty.
“If I end up having back problems a few years down the road, I’m blaming you.”
“Oh, you.” Shuichi giggled and Hiro couldn’t help but smile; no matter what the singer did to his back, Hiro would still adore him, sprained ankle and all. “It’s not my fault the floor was slippery.”
“True,” Hiro said. “But it was your fault you weren’t watching the choreographer.”
Shuichi sniffed, indignant. “I was watching him!”
“Just not the right parts.”
“Yes, well…”
Hiro smirked faintly, readjusting again, getting a better grip on Shuichi’s legs. For a boy, Shuichi had nice legs, Hiro would willingly admit, but he wasn’t particularly comfortable having them clenched around his waist. (A few years ago, it wouldn’t have been a problem, but after being surrounded by extremely gay men for so long and being so far away from feminine companionship…well, his uber-hetero-masculinity wasn’t quite as confident as it used to be.)
But Hiro would do anything for his Shuichi.
Hiro looked up from the sidewalk at the sound of a car horn honking. He smiled a relieved smile when he saw K waving through the rolled-down window.
“Need a lift, boys?”
Hiro would do anything for his Shuichi, but not when there was another, more preferable option that didn’t wear on his bones and didn’t cause his masculine pride to look sulkily into a mirror and whimper, “Who am I, really?”
He opened his mouth to reply, but the boy on his back beat him to it.
“No thanks, K-san!”
…That little-
Hiro watched the American drive away, hopeless. After a moment, he started walking again and said, “Tell me something. Are there ever moments when you forget that other people besides you exist?”
“Hiro, what a silly question.”
“Yeah,” he sighed, “I know.”
Oh well. It was only several more blocks, anyway.
