Every time Weevil sees Veronica she is searching for something, and he finds himself at a loss.
First it was answers about Lilly’s death, interspersed with answers about why Duncan was acting the way he was, why her friends so readily turned their backs on her and who had raped her.
He did his best to help her then, a bitterness growing inside of him as he realized no matter how much he tried to help her, no matter how much he put himself out there for her she would always go for jackasses like Echolls or Kane.
Secondly it was answers about the bus crash, and Weevil found himself praying nightly for her to find them.
Anything at all to remove that look in her eyes, one he had never seen before no matter what had happened before.
Veronica looked haunted, and the dark circles under her eyes got worse daily.
It was everything he could do not to drag her to his house, force her into his bed and get her to go to sleep.
She keeps searching though, and soon stops asking for his help, which makes him feel like he’s worth nothing, even more than being strung up by the rest of the PCHers.
It’s hard, falling from the graces of people he thought he could trust and without her to turn to he finds himself searching too.
He searches for a way in which he can be worthy, wanting to impress her even if she’s stopped noticing him that much and she and Echolls are supposed to be “epic”, whatever the fuck that means.
Veronica gets her answers, and he finds himself wanting to resurrect that insane little shit Casablancas so that he can take him out himself. How dare he touch Veronica, or hurt that Mac chick.
Weevil may not know much, but despite his bravado he feels lost. He strikes out, using revenge as a method of satisfying his own losses.
As he’s being led in handcuffs toward the exit of the graduation area for once he doesn’t search for her eyes because he knows all he will see is a look of disappointment.
Weevil doesn’t see her again for a while, and when he does the tilt of her head, and the slight cocking of her hips renders him speechless.
She’s even more beautiful than she was in high school, and he didn’t even think that was possible.
“You’re out,” she commented lightly, “Good to see you Weevil.”
Weevil nods and there are minutes of banter which pass between them before she leaves. He doesn’t expect to hear from her, but when she does it is a big surprise.
She’s broken up with Echolls, it took a while, and when her eyes search his he doesn’t stop himself.
He can’t stop himself from kissing her, and it’s the best kiss he’s ever had.
Veronica is the one to pull back, and she looks into his eyes as though she’s trying to find all the answers and he doesn’t have them for her.
But as he stares back at her he realizes that it’s something she can accept, his own eyes sliding shut as she kisses him again.
It was time for them to both stop searching.
