Pokemon, Jessie/Cassidy -- #8

May 20, 2008 22:41

Jessie’s used to being caught, so she manages not to jump when the light comes on. She looks over her shoulder with a huff, as if offended, but Cassidy merely arches an eyebrow and puts her hands on her hips. Her hips which, Jessie wishes she could keep from noticing, are bare.

“Drop the suitcases and turn around,” Cassidy commands in a voice that would stop a herd of wild Taurus; Jessie has no choice but to obey. “Now tell me, what were you doing?”

Jessie thinks it was pretty obvious what she was doing, and she says so with a haughty sniff. Cassidy just glowers and Jessie would feel intimidated if she hadn’t once caught Cassidy practicing that look in a mirror.

“Honey, I’m leaving.”

“Honey, I don’t think so.”

Jessie sighs and crosses her arms. She’s got nothing against stubbornness, but she only really likes it when she’s the one being stubborn with other people.

“Cass-”

“You couldn’t even say goodbye first? I mean, I know you and James got used to taking the coward’s way out of things-”

“Hey!”

“-but I figured some things had changed in five years.”

“Yeah, well, I guess they haven’t.” Jessie turns back and reaches down, curls her fingers around the handles of her suitcases.

“Jessie, it’s been five years. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”

“Sure it does.” Jessie frowns and grips her luggage tighter; she thinks maybe James was right when he told her she had too much stuff-but, nah, what does he know? “It means I’ve been here too long.”

“I see.”

And, oh, she sounds so hurt. Jessie wishes she wouldn’t care. But she does, she’s cared for years, and that scares her, and that’s why she has to leave, now.

“Cass, I’m sorry.”

“You’ve made it for five years.”

“But what if I can’t make it for five more?”

Jessie hears her coming, hears her naked feet on the floor, and she knows she should move now, but she doesn’t. And then Cassidy is in front of her, reaching her hands down to cover her own, gently coaxing her fingers free until the suitcases drop to the floor and fall open, everything she owns spilling out onto the floor around them.

“What if you can?”

Jessie doesn’t know. She doesn’t know and she doesn’t want to try because she doesn’t want to hurt herself or anyone else. And she wants to tell Cassidy that, but she’s kissing her, and Jessie really likes kissing her and it’s so much better than talking. And she really doesn’t want to pack up all her stuff again, anyway.
