Colby

His parents and the doctors had to explain what happened to him three times before it finally sunk in. He took it as a sign that quitting baseball is the right decision.

Mom and dad are always ready with ice chips or a spoonful of soft sherbet. Sometimes it's Judy in the chair next to his bed, but once it was clear Colby would pull through, she lost interest and spent her time writing letters to Walt, her boyfriend, stationed in Germany.

It isn't until he's home that he gets to enjoy the apology basket Number 23 had sent him.

Evan

"We need to find you a new place." Evan makes the stretch a snag for Colby's surf rag.

"Sure," Colby says. "Somewhere with a pool." They're mesmerized by the TV and exhausted. Colby'd beat Evan to the remote, but the sound's low. Evan decided not to fight. He tucks mom's quilt tighter.

"Somewhere bigger." If anyone calls about work he'll... sleep through it.

"I don't need much space."

Evan can see boxes in the spare room, some with his name, some with Colby's. "Not now, but our stuff is multiplying."

Colby slouches into the couch. "Yeah, ok. We'll find something."
