Colby
Colby worries sometimes Evan’s going to ride the Air Force train to the end. The longer Evan stays in, the longer they have to keep secrets, the less life they have together. Colby knew most of the sacrifices he was getting into, but maybe he’d misjudged how much this new assignment has changed Evan the same way CID changed Colby.
But CID made Colby realize the army wasn’t the end of his path. Evan seems more committed to definitely-not-land-surveying.
People, society, culture, and laws may change, but it won’t be soon enough for to have Evan stars and a husband.
Evan
Every mission Evan’s had at the SGC has involved travel through the Stargate. Briefings are topographical maps, layouts of enemy complexes. He’s no kind of astronomer, and star navigation isn’t necessary for missions SG-11 gets (and too much star-gazing off-world is likely to get someone the stink-eye from Edwards).
When he opens the file for Atlantis, the first few photos in the are full of stars. A lopsided pinwheel frozen in space. Page after page of delicate planets circling shining suns. There’s a map of the planet’s (Lantea’s) sky, hung with spindly constellations.
He doesn’t think before he says yes.
