Something I just figured out that has been subconsciously bothering me since GoF, at least. Why are the women so much more emotionally aware than the men? It must be because they're Women qua women--it doesn't have anything to do with personality. I'm thinking specifically of Hermione here. She's obviously an utter social misfit until she befriends Harry and Ron and probably after, too. Yet all of a sudden she's the all-knowing romance Buddha. Up on all the gossip, she knows who's interested in whom at all times . . . It just doesn't jive.
I've wondered about that, too. How is it that she is able to tell Ron to his face, "Next time you want to ask me to a dance, ask me first instead of waiting until the last minute?" or whatever it is she says, but at the same time doesn't ask Ron out herself, if she's so interested in him? Are sexist stereotypes (like that men doing the asking and women sit around and wait to be asked) the same in the wizarding world? Even if that woman you are hoping to woo can turn you into a toad?
