Theme #1 - Lake (Set D)
Summary Kairi and Riku have a talk by a lake.
It was quiet. Only the occasional bird could be heard chirping above the soft rippling of the water. Kairi loved the serenity. It gave her a chance to just sit and think. It had been six months since she, Sora and Riku had been reunited and, as much as she loved being with her friends, she also needed the peace and quiet. Time away from their competitions and squabbling for a change. She’d gone to a lake a little further into the jungle, leaving Riku and Sora behind to finish their sword fight. Riku was winning, last she saw.
Kairi scooted forward just a little bit and dipped her toes into the water to test the temperature. Almost perfect. She smiled a little bit and was about to slip in when a figure slowly emerged from the trees behind her. She was ankle deep into the water when the figure grabbed her from behind.
“Boo!” Kairi let out a short scream and spun around, frowning slightly.
“Riku!” she said, attempting to scold him. He lifted his eyebrows and she was unable to keep the smile off her face. “Where’s Sora? I thought you two were inseparable for the day.”
“We were,” he told her. “Then we got separated.” She giggled a little bit at his choice of words and shook her head.
“Then come swimming with me. The water’s really nice,” she told him, taking him by the wrists and pulling him toward the water’s edge.
“Really? Great,” he let her lead him toward the water’s edge. “You know… it’s nice that we’re all together again.” That caught Kairi off guard. She stopped for a second and tilted her head. Finally, she smiled and nodded in agreement.
“Yeah, it really is. I missed you two,” she said, before launching herself forward to hug him.
Riku was the one caught off guard this time. He stumbled back as Kairi hit him and the two of them went tumbling to the grass. It took a moment for him to realize what happened, but when he did, he began to laugh. Kairi looked worried for a second, but soon joined in. Neither made the move to get up. Kairi rested her head on Riku’s chest and closed her eyes, enjoying the comfort and warmth he provided. After a moment she felt him tentatively wrap his arms around her waist, keeping her close to him.
“Hey, Kairi…” Riku began, hesitantly. He got a soft sound in response, so he attempted to go on. “Hey, I was thinking that maybe…” he paused. “Still want to go swimming?”
Lame… Riku sighed, regretting that. Kairi, also, seemed to be expecting something else.
“Oh, yeah. I forgot.” She stood up and offered her hand to him. He smiled and took it, unable to forgive himself for that missed opportunity. They walked toward the lake, hand in hand, not saying a word. Once they reached the water’s edge, he stopped once more. It was now or never.
“Kairi,” he said. She turned to him and smiled.
“Yes, Riku?” He returned the smile. As he opened his mouth to speak however, a loud yell resounded around them. The two teenagers both glanced up just in time to see both Sora and Tarzan plummet down from the vines and into the lake, drenching everything around them, including Riku and Kairi.
Riku shook his arms and sighed. As Sora climbed out of the water, both he and Kairi began to laugh.
“You look like a drowned rat,” Kairi said. Sora pouted and shook himself, much like a dog would.
“I’m not the only one,” he said. “You guys look funny.”
“And whose fault is that?” Kairi asked him, reaching her hands out and shoving him back into the lake. Sora held onto her hands and she fell forward into the water with him. Riku laughed and knelt by the water’s edge. He cursed his rotten luck, but managed to keep his frustration inside. If it was now or never, it was just going to have to be never.
