I'd promised I would come back

"Who's there? What are you? Say something!"

"You're still quick with your staff. Student"

"Portier?"

"Do you think anybody else could have sneaked in your room without you hearing anything?"

"You're dead."

"And nothing you can do with your staff would make me more dead - or stop me from being dead - so you can put it down again."

"Why are you here?"

"Because I'd promised I would come back."

"If I'd still had had any doubts about this being really you, now I'd be convinced."

"This might be the closest I ever got to a compliment from you."

"I'm sorry."

"And that was the first apology. Which is a completely unnecessary one."

"I wasn't apologizing for not complimenting you earlier."

"I know. And there is nothing else you need to apologize for, either."

"I doubt that."

"I see you're as stubborn as ever."

"How can you say I have no reason to apologize to you?"

"Because if you'd done things differently, if you'd helped me back then we wouldn't be here now. I'd be dead. Actually dead. You'd be dead or worse. Anne, Ilario, your brother and many more would be dead. And our souls would be food for the Souleater and nobody would be able to stop him."

"I know that. That's what I told myself when I did all these horrible things. To you. To so many others. They were still horrible things. Cruel. I can't just forget them."

"I know."

"Oh, you know. That's your saintly wisdom I assume. Does it also tell you what I should do now?"

"Accept that you had no choice."

"I very clearly remember having a choice. Repeatedly. Which is more than you or Anne had."

"And that's where you're wrong. Student."

"Please enlighten me Sante Ianne. Because to me, you sound like a fool and not like a saint."

"I'm sure if Anne had had a choice she would have chosen a happy and healthy family. If I'd had one I would have stayed at court and practiced spellwork. And if somebody had asked you, you wouldn't have wanted to be put in a situation where you could only save the world if you hurt others. But none of us had that choice."

"If you put it like this..."

"I sound less like a fool?"

"But..."

"Accepting that there is nothing you can do...could have done is not easy. Believe me. I have...well some experience on that subject. But if you start by believing really believing that neither I, nor Anne, nor Ilario blames you for what you've done. That's...well a start."

"You seem to have actually acquired some saintly wisdom."

"I swear. One more word about saintly wisdom or calling me Sante Ianne and I'll make sure that my next reincarnation's purpose is just to strangle you."

"That sounds somewhat blasphemous to me."

"I'm sure that I can't actually blaspheme."

"I...you know I think I might do some research to find out if you can. Sante Ianne."

"Hmpf."
