“She’s innocent, Harasawa,” Aomine says. She is absolutely convinced. It’s not bias, it’s not just a hunch, it’s not wishful thinking. She knows.

“That’s chief Harasawa for you,” Harasawa replies coolly, “and we will determine that after questioning her, as we do in all cases.” His sharp looks is telling Aomine not to argue with him. Aomine, however, is not afraid of doing just that.

She puts herself in Harasawa’s way, elbows out and taking up more space than necessary, just to make it clear how serious she is about this. “I know her. Very well. And I’m telling you, she’s innocent.”

“And I’m telling you, officer Aomine, that we will follow the protocol, as is law.” Harasawa’s look is even harder and sharper, if such thing is even possible, and his tone very final, signaling the end of that discussion. He manages to maneuver past Aomine, but Aomine isn’t a woman easily bypassed.

“The protocol is stupid, we’re just losing time to catch the real murderer!” she retorts and gets in Harasawa’s path again. This time, however, Harasawa just keeps walking and ends up pushing Aomine’s shoulder slightly.

“Do you want me to take you off this case?” Harasawa threatens, now also looking annoyed, which is not a good sign. “If you know her so well, you can question her. Get the whole truth out of her so we have enough proof of her innocence to let her go quickly.”

Aomine is left gaping at Harasawa. This has never been her intention. How could she possibly question Kise? Why would Harasawa do that to her?

There seems to be some understanding in Harasawa’s eyes, but gone so quickly it might as well not have happened. “Or do you want someone else to question her?”

“No!” If anything would be worse than Aomine having to question Kise, it would be for someone else to do it. She’d rather break all the laws than let anyone else do it, and she is part of the organization that’s responsible for catching the rule-breakers.

“Then go on and do it. I’ll be with you on this case.”

Aomine doesn’t know whether to feel relieved or to go through every single curse word she knows in her head. What she does know is that she needs to calm down and get her thoughts sorted before she goes in there and questions her friend.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t get much time for that. They round the next corner and there they are. Harasawa doesn’t waste any time in opening the door and letting them both into the interrogation room.

“Aominecchi!” Kise’s face lights up upon seeing Aomine and she almost gets up, no doubt to rush to Aomine and hang off her as usual, but Aomine shakes her head and thank heavens Kise understands, though she sits back down with a pout.

She looks different today. There is less make-up overall, but that’s not what worries Aomine. It’s that the make-up that is there isn’t perfect. There is a small dot of eyeliner beneath her lower eyelash, and her lip-gloss isn’t applied evenly across both her lips. While her blonde ponytail curls neatly at the bottom, there are several shorter strands sticking out in her fringe. This is not the flawless model that Aomine knows. Something must be very wrong.

Harasawa lets their small exchange go without comment, which Aomine is grateful for.

“Kise-” Aomine starts, but is rudely interrupted.

“Aominecchi! Please tell your police friends that I’m innocent! I couldn’t never murder someone!” Kise whines. Aomine knows for a fact that this is a lie. Kise is very capable of murder if she ever needed to do it. But Aomine also knows for a fact that Kise would never do it if not absolutely necessary. As in a life-or-death situation. And she certainly would not lie about it afterwards.

Aomine also knows that Kise is not beneath using her reputation and image as a model to act dumb and clueless, making herself look innocent and harmless.

It won’t work on Harasawa. It can’t work on Aomine herself.

“Kise,” Aomine says sharply, to get Kise to stop and actually listen. Kise’s eyes widen the slightest fraction, something the untrained eye wouldn’t notice, but Aomine, knowing Kise so well, does. She definitely has her attention, then. “We need to tell you about your rights first.”

“Oh,” Kise says, taken aback a little, but she nods nonetheless, biting down on her lower lip.

It doesn’t take long, but they do follow the protocol to a T. Neither Aomine nor Kise are thrilled about it.

“Kise, could you tell me everything you remember? Please don’t leave out anything.” Aomine hopes she’s conveying enough urgency for Kise to catch. She hopes Kise will listen to her for once in her life. She really doesn’t want to make this any less comfortable than it already is.

Kise’s face briefly, very briefly, contort into a sad grimace, but it happens so fast and disappears so quickly, Aomine isn’t sure she actually saw it. “That’s the thing, Aominecchi… I don’t remember a thing…” Kise says and Aomine hears Kise’s voice almost breaking at the end.

It’s the worst thing she could have said.

“When I came to, he- Narukawa-san, he was-” Kise tries to say, but it’s visibly hard for her to utter it. That little fact.

“Narukawa Hachiro was dead?” Harasawa finishes for her, gentler than Aomine would have ever suspected him being capable of.

Kise nods and the biting down on her lower lip intensifies. Aomine realizes that that’s probably where her lipgloss has gone. It breaks her heart a little. She’s never seen Kise like this.

“I couldn’t have- he was- I would never!” Kise further stammers, but then she quiets down a little and whispers, "but I don’t remember if I did it or not…”

It’s the first time that Aomine starts to doubt his own conviction.

She’s going to have a lot of work to do.
