(kleiner Edit: ich hab doch tatsächlich den falschen Namen geschrieben. Mea culpa, ich hätte vielleicht doch nochmal drüberlesen sollen orz)
Satsuki had always been the one in their team to scrutinize and analyze any situation thoroughly, and she’d only ever made one mistake. One mistake that had broken their team into pieces. She had also always been the only one with some tact and common sense with regard to what’s appropriate, and she had completely forgotten about that little tidbit unti now.
It became apparent that none of the others would suggest to go outside to talk, even though that would entail Kagami telling them about the attack on Kuroko, who was right there.
“Let’s go outside. We can all sit down in the hall and hear you out,” Satsuki suggested, presuming it would be a longer story, and trying to sound as much like she did when using her powers as possible without actually using them.
Kagami frowned in response, his eyes briefly flickering to Kuroko. “Right. We should, I guess.”
With that settled, Satsuki turned back to Kuroko, took his hand and squeezed it softly. “We’re going to get the one who did this, and arrest him. I promise.”
They locked eyes for a moment, an understanding passing between them, and Kuroko squeezed back.
Satsuki followed the others outside, ignoring Haga-san next to the door, but they didn’t get very far when the doors of the ward opened and none other than Riko and Hyuga came striding towards them. If they were surprised at Satsuki’s presence, they didn’t show it.
“MDCI, we were called to assist with a case,” Riko explained in lieu of a greeting. Her gaze lingered on Satsuki for a moment, then it looked like she forced herself to look away.
“That was probably my superior,” Kise said with his teeth gritted. Obviously, he hadn’t been in favor of that decision.
Satsuki, on the other hand, was very in favor. Not only did so many of her former team get a chance to work together again, but she would also be able to officially snoop around instead of breaking the law by doing her own thing, which she had always been trying to avoid.
“What’s the situation?” Hyuga asked, all business. Out of everyone on the team, Satsuki had found that he seemd to be the most suited for this type of work - interviews, both of witnesses and victims and from the press, assessing the situation and asking the right questions to get all the needed information. With all the people present, she was glad he had come.
“That guy,” Aomine said and rudely pointed his finger at Kagami’s face, “was about to tell what he saw.”
“Oi, stop pointing at me!”
Satsuki quickly took Aomines wrist and pulled his arm down, all the while glaring at him, though Aomine only raised his shoulders and mouthed a ‘what?’ at her. She had known it was only a matter of time these two weres would clash, not least because they could very likely sense each others strength, and of course Aomine had to choose the most inappropriate moment.
“That’s Kagami Taiga. He’s a witness, and from what I could gather, was also attacked,” Satsuki added. It had taken her a moment to recognize and remember the name from when she had looked up all the people her former teammates worked with now. But she had remembered. Kagami Taiga, top of his class, great skills and great work ethik. Satsuki remembered she had thought Kuroko would be safe with him.
“Yeah, that about sums it up,” Kagami confirmed, frowning again. “How do you know my full name?”
“Not important right now. “Satsuki waved away the concern and focused on Riko, because she knew Riko would agree.
“That’s right,” Riko said, “please tell us everything you remember.”
They all gathered in a sort-of circle around Kagami. Satsuki could see how he felt uncomfortable with that, but right now, she didn’t care. She needed to know all he saw so she could do her job.
“It was late and we were on our way home. Kuroko and I always walk together till the intersection between the fifteenth and sixteenth block, which is when I turn right towards the twelfth block and he turns left towards the nineteenth block. So, we parted there as always, but after a while, can’t have been more than a couple minutes, I remembered I gave Kuroko my keys because I didn’t have my backpack at hand when we were called for a fire, so I turned and jogged after him. I only really found him in that narrow uninhabited side street because that- asshole beat him so hard he flew against a dumpster.”
Kagami stopped there, his face displaying an angry frown. He had balled his hands into fists and they seemed to be shaking with barely restrained anger. Satsuki could understand him very well. She felt her own rage come to the surface, though she pushed it back down. It wouldn’t do to mess up like that. Not when it was about Kuroko and her team.
Kagami sighed, took a deep breath, and continued. “So I noticed the racket and saw them. The guy was huge, but a hundred percent human. I stepped in, grabbed his should to spin him around. He had good reflexes and managed to hit me a couple times, but I had him in the end, pinned him down to the ground. I thought it was over, but then someone else knocked me out.”
He looked Satsuki right in the eyes. “He wasn’t alone. And I think it was planned.”
“What makes you think that?” Hyuga asked before Aomine or Kise could say something stupid, which Satsuki was immensely grateful for.
“The guy I fought? He kept saying ‘This is just the beginning’ and he was grinning, even though I had him on the ground.”
“Thank you, this is valuable information. But why were we called?” Hyuga glanced at Satsuki, but she wasn’t any wiser either.
“That would be because the one Kagami fought happens to be a wanted hitman. We’ve gathered enough evidence against him to finally get him, but he’s on the run. Guess he’s still offering his services, though,” Kise explained.
Hyuga nodded. “Makes sense.” He turned towards Riko and Satsuki, and Satsuki knew what he wanted them to do before he even said it.
“You two check the street where the fight happened. Maybe you can find more clues.”
Satsuki and Riko exchanged a glance. Satsuki knew Riko was working through something, probably her prejudices against Monsters. She knew that, and she knew that it was only to be expected, but it had still hurt a place very deep inside her, and she wasn’t sure she could stand to be alone with Riko right now.
“Ah, I could lead you there if you’d like,” Kagami offered, at the right moment.
“I’ll go too,” Aomine said, side-eying Kagami. Not at the right moment. Satsuki wasn’t sure it was such a good idea to have those two working together already. She looked at Kise pleadingly.
“Oooh, you want to go to that boring crime scene? Well, you do that while I go track down that hitman,” Kise teased Aomine, winking at Satsuki conspiratorially. Satsuki beamed back at him.
Of course she would have wished for far better circumstances, with none of them hurt, but if this was her chance to pick up the broken pieces of her team and put them back together, she’d take it. And maybe, nothing else would have got Aomine and Kise to work together like that again. And maybe, they could get past their damage.
Satsuki gritted her teeth. No need to get ahead of herself. They needed to get a job done.
When she turned to Riko, she was already looking at Satsuki, as if she wanted to say something, but whatever it was, it could wait until they were out of the hospital at least.
“Let’s go,” Satsuki said and marched ahead.
