When Aomine walks into the interrogation room this time, determined to show how wrong everyone else is, and how right she herself was from the start, she stops dead in her tracks the moment she actually takes in Kise’s appearance.
She looks even worse than before. She must have cried at some point - the badly brushed away tear tracks full of mascara were evidence enough. Not to mention her ruffled hair. It had only been a couple hours since Aomine left to find clues, and yet, it had been enough for Kise to slowly break apart.
Instead of asking her about the poison right away, Aomine takes the time to sit down in front of Kise and clear her throat. Which is completely unnecessary, given that she’s had Kise’s attention from the moment she had opened the door, but Aomine’s never been good at this. At being nice, or tactful, or anything to do with feelings.
“How are you holding up?” she finally asks, even though it’s pretty clear that Kise’s not doing well.
Kise replies with a noncommittal “Hn” and a fake smile, accompanied with a small shrug of her shoulders. It pierces Aomine’s heart, though she can understand what it must be like for Kise. Kise who likes her physical freedom, even if she can’t have any other type of freedom, really, being famous. And locked in an interrogation room - which nowadays looks much nicer than in the crime shows on TV, with an actual wooden table and normal, comfortable chairs, not to mention windows, but still very bare with nothing else in it that might serve as a distraction - someone like Kise is bound to wither.
“Cheer up, we found something that might help your case. Narukawa was poisoned,” Aomine says. Her hand twitches and she almost reaches out and puts it on Kise’s clasped ones, but reigns in her impulse at the last moment. Her words have an immediate effect all on their own, anyway.
Kise’s eyes widen and her mouth even twitches as if she’s almost ready to smile, but the usual fire that’s in her eyes has yet to be seen. “He… he was? But does that prove that it wasn’t me?”
Aomine sighs. “Unfortunately, it doesn’t. But I know you’re innocent, and I’m going to prove it. I was hoping you could tell me something about oleander.”
Kise frowns and unclasps her hands to lay them flat on the table. “It’s a shrub as far as I know, and its flowers can have different colors. I know it grows in some of our parks around here. At least that’s what Mariko said when I asked her if she knew the name of that shrub when we were there for a shooting.”
“Who’s Mariko?” Maybe she’s desperate or grasping for straws here, but Aomine would take anything she could get. And that Mariko must be a much more likely culprit than Kise.
“She’s a colleague of mine, and she usually knows all about flowers, but you don’t think it was her, do you?” Kise worries her lower lip and actually, genuinely looks concerned, and underneath it, a little frightened. Aomine could see that.
“I can’t know until I’ve followed all the clues.” Aomine takes in Kise’s appearance again. “We need to do something about that.”
“You’ll come with me, back to Narukawa’s flat, I got permission to take you.” Aomine is so glad she talked to Harasawa before and convinced him. So glad that she doesn’t have to leave Kise here in that state.
When Kise’s eyes lose that dead look and she actually forms a small smile, Aomine gets the feeling that this is the best thing she’s done today. It’s not much, but Aomine gets the feeling it doesn’t have to be.
“C’mon, time to turn you back into a model instead of this horror,” Aomine says, grinning. She gets the bird flipped at her in reply.
