Nov 16, 2008 10:27

After spending the early afternoon at the fortified churches we hit the road to the Borgo Pass to spend the night in Hotel Castle Dracula. We had no idea what a long and hair-raising drive this would be. The Borgo Pass was actually quite far from the Brasov and required traveling on tiny roads with a lot of switch-backs and potholes. I've been enjoying the pictures and stories of Romania. What made you decide to go there? Was it inexpensive (I think Romania is only recently in the EU, or trying to get in...)? Would you recommend a trip there?

The exchange rate to Lei was pretty good at the time so our purchases (snacks, gift, etc) were inexpensive. The tour was one of the cheapest "Dracula Tours" but had to be prepaid in euros a couple months before. Unfortunately this was during a low in the dollar vs the euro.

We went to Romania specifically for the Dracula Tour to spend our 20th weddings anniversary. We meet at a Halloween party 23 years ago and had our hand-fasting on Samhain 1988. We wanted a liitle element of B movie to celebrate Halloween and our marriage.

I would really recommend going to Romania. However, I would suggest having a better plan for how to get around the country and better expectations for what can be seen in 1 week.

re: the Road to Dracula's Castle - it was Transylvania, and indeed there was some terror involved...just not the terror expected...

I did not feel like Van Helsing chasing the Count through the Carpathians mountains, but more like the scream queen being chased by the psycho killer :)

The "Castle Dracula" Lost a lot of magic in the daylight. It was fun, and I agree walking around the castle was the spooky part. You had to watch the steps in the dark corridors.
I think the dinner at Club Dracula was spookier than this one.

The drive to the castle, I have come to know in the past 3 weeks is average for Romania and Dan was driving like a normal Romanian. Steve, they all drive like this. I am SO glad to be home were the road rules are clear!

Keep the updates coming, it is great to see another person's perspective about the same trip.
