Bernd tied his horse Blitzkrieg to the rings outside his stall. The big black Friesian calmly stood there, watching his young master with half an eye as Bernd dragged over a bale of hay. Talking softly to the stallion in German, the twelve year carefully picked up his horse’s hoof. Using a pick, he carefully cleaned the dirt and debris from the underside of the Friesian’s hoof the way his previous owner had shown him. Bernd slowly made his way around Blitzkrieg, cleaning each hoof in turn. When he was finished, he put the pick aside and picked up the curry comb.
Dragging an old wooden crate over, Bernd used it as a stepstool to reach the top of Blitzkrieg’s neck. Using a firm circular motion, he moved towards his horse’s tail, loosening the dirt in his coat. After going over Blitzkrieg’s left side, he moved to the right, repeating the process. Bernd put the curry comb away and took out the dandy brush. He flicked the brush over the same areas he had used the curry comb on, removing dead hair, sweat, and dirt. When he was finished, Bernd went over the same areas again, this time using a soft body brush. Blitzkrieg loved the feel of the brush, and closing his eyes, he leaned on Bernd.
“Hey!” Bernd gave the stallion a gentle push.
Blitzkrieg snorted and shook his head. The Friesian swished his tail when Bernd ran the brush over his hind quarters. By the time Bernd was ready to go over Blitzkrieg’s legs, the stallion was standing there with his eyes closed,
Bernd chuckled softly to himself as he cleaned his horse’s face. He moved the crate around so that he could he could finish grooming his horse, by brushing Blitzkrieg’s forelock. Occasionally using his fingers to detangle it, the way Amber had shown him how to gently detangle her hair; Bernd finished it by braiding it. He then moved around to do the same thing with the Friesian’s mane.
“You’re such a good boy,” he said softly in German to his horse, before giving him a quick kiss on his nose. Bernd laughed when Blitzkrieg whinnied back at him. He loved the warm horsey breaths and the gentle way the stallion nudged him. Giving him another little kiss, Bernd told him he was going to go to clean his tail now. He found it easier, if much the same as the mane, as he could stand on the ground instead of the crate. Standing just off to the side, Bernd took his time detangling Blitzkrieg’s tail and brushing it.
When he was finished grooming his horse, Bernd went to the tack room to get the fly spray. They were heading into summer, and the horse magazines and books; he had gotten out of the library, recommended spraying one’s horse as the final step in grooming them. He may have only had him for a few days, but Bernd was totally in love with the big black stallion and he was ready, willing, and able to anything the horse required for his wellbeing.
Putting the fly spray and his grooming tools away, Bernd led Blitzkrieg out to the paddock behind the stable. He let the horse loose inside it, before heading back to the stable to muck it out. Finished with his chores, Bernd brought Blitzkrieg back inside his tall. Closing the door, he said, “I’ll be back after school, okay? And don’t worry, Blitzkrieg, Vati will check on you and make sure you’re okay, okay?” He grinned. “And when I get home, we’ll go riding! And I’ll you Amber and James too! Oh, they’re my friends in case you’re wondering.” Bernd rubbed the Friesian’s nose. He returned the warm horsey breath blown at him with some of his own, earning a soft whicker from Blitzkrieg. “Anyways, later, Blitz!”
Bernd reluctantly left his horse behind in the stable and headed back to the house. He had to hurry and wash up and change his clothes, so he could have breakfast, before heading off to school. He could not wait to get there so he could tell his friends all about his new horse.
