Battle Plan | ...But Who's the Daddy?
CONQUEROR
DG sat down on the edge of her bed and reached up to undo the clasp on her necklace. She was so tired that she nearly left the thing on and simply crawled into bed, fully-dressed. Of course, trying to sleep with the added proportions of a baby was hard enough, why make it more complicated with a full skirt?
She also had a fear of choking herself in the middle of the night, not that the chain was strong enough.
Hearing the door open, she threw a quick glance to her husband.
"I hope the giraffe survived."
"Ha ha," Jeb said as he stopped next to her and helped removed the necklace. "Actually, the real concern was from the penguins. Slippery devils..." he trailed off, pushing DG's hair off her face and running the back of his hand along her cheek.
"Are you going to turn everything into a military strategy? Because if you start calling diaper duty a suicide mission or claim a surrender at three in the morning-" Jeb was smiling, which made her smile - damn that man and his smile - and he leaned in to kiss her.
"I will never surrender," he said quietly.
OF COURSE, IT COULD HAVE GONE LIKE THIS...
WANTED
'This is my family,' she nodded, as the four of them moved from arguing about crib placement to the proper way to hold the baby when it cried. She had to laugh, because only Cain had experience with holding a baby.
Well, it was possible Jeb dealt with a baby or two while in the Resistance, and it was entirely possible Glitch had been around the palace when she and Az were babies, and Raw probably had been in the vicinity of a baby...
Shaking her head, DG left them to plan and plot and decided to go see her mother.
The Queen was lounging on the half-sofa in the library, humming a tune as she stared at the fireplace. "How're you feeling, Mom?" DG asked as she breezed in and planted a kiss on her mother's cheek.
"I'm fine, dear. And you?" DG breathed a laugh and shook her head, throwing a glance over her shoulder.
"I'd almost pay to sit them down with Risk, not that I even know how to play that game." She shrugged and continued: "Where's Dad?"
The Queen sighed and ran a hand over her large stomach. "He's getting me something disgusting to eat."
OR MAYBE LIKE THIS...
DELIRIOUS
Glitch bounded into the bedroom a few hours later and dropped a stack of papers and books to the desk. DG glanced up from the book she was reading and raised an eyebrow as he pulled out the chair and sat down.
"We have a new problem," he informed her with a grim look. DG sighed and set the book down on the bed and looked at Glitch. "This entire building is unsafe. The number of things to be put in one's mouth... the sharp corners." He looked up to DG and sighed heavily.
"The chandelier has to go, dear." DG rolled her eyes again and waved Glitch over to the bed.
As he sat down next to her, his hand moved to her belly and her hand moved up to push some of his stray curls back. "I think we have plenty of time to baby-proof the place before there's any chance of the baby needing it." Glitch frowned and pointed to the stack of books, but DG pulled him back.
"You need to stop worrying," she told him, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to his nose. "And when the baby cries, don't hide in your lab, okay?"
IT'S QUITE POSSIBLE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED...
ELASTIC
DG was truly beginning to wonder how she'd managed to get herself into this mess.
That's right: she volunteered.
Her big sister was madly in love with a good man who loved her and they wanted a family. Unfortunately, because of the damage done to her by the witch, Az wasn't able to have a baby.
Well, Az had no problem contributing to the creation of a baby, but it wasn't safe for her or the baby to try and reach full-term.
DG blamed her pulled heartstrings - not to mention a slight obsession with Star Trek, which she totally blames on Popsicle - as the reason she even considered making the suggestion.
She would carry the baby to term. Everyone would be happy and she could 'experience the wonders of motherhood' without having to actually 'be the mom.'
It wasn't so bad, really... Glitch had figured out all the details of the right time to transfer the baby between Az and DG and everyone involved was always making sure she was comfortable and content.
It was kind of annoying.
But it was for Az.
If DG could do one thing to make her sister's new life better, she would.
MORE LIKELY, IT WAS LIKE THIS...
LOOP
"Sorry about earlier," Cain said quietly, resting his chin in the crook of DG's neck. His arms wrapped around her and he pressed a kiss to the back of the base of her skull, just behind her ear.
He promised to help her put the crib together, but was distracted by Jeb and Az and Glitch, who all showed up within moments of each other and started arguing about the best place to put the crib.
DG didn't budge, but her eyes did move to one side; she wanted him to think she was angry - and she was - but she also couldn't be angry with the man for very long.
And she hated him for it.
Cain brought his hand up to her neck and turned her slightly toward him. Leaning his head down an inch, he gave her that smile and those eyes and she had to look away as he broke her resolve.
Cain smiled and pulled her into a hug, resting his cheek on the top of her head.
"I'll put together the next one," he said in a low tone.
"Next one?" DG snorted.
"One, two... twelve," Cain shrugged.
"I'm sorry, what?" she laughed.
BUT WHAT IF IT HAD BEEN THIS...
TABOO *smushes

Cain and Glitch were sitting in Glitch's lab, each working on their own projects and enjoying the silent company. DG watched the two of them from the doorway for a moment and smiled.
They weren't the first pair she'd have ever considered if someone asked, but it worked.
She'd, of course, grown up in a world where the concept wasn't such a big deal - well, it was a big deal for some, simply because they could make a big deal... regardless if their opinions were valid or just.
Freedom of speech in action...
If they were happy, she was happy. And when they came to her with a request, she was more than happy to assist. It was a little weird, and a bit of a hard sell to some... but DG didn't back down.
Laughing lightly, DG moved into the lab and stopped between her friends. As they looked up to her, each with a smile, she grabbed their closest hands and pressed them to her stomach.
"She's kicking," DG said with a grin. A moment later, both of them felt the movement and laughed before looking at each other, grinning like fools.
They were a weird family.
OKAY... HERE'S WHAT REALLY HAPPENED...
RESTLESS
DG left the three of them to continue plotting all the possible ways to get from the doorway to the crib when the baby cried, instead going for a walk with Raw.
"DG still not well?" the Viewer asked, squeezing her hand. DG smiled and motioned for Raw to continue down the hall with her.
"I'm fine, really. Just counting the days," she said simply, letting a hand rest on the curve of her very large stomach. Judging by the Zone calendar, she still had four weeks, but she'd be happy to have the baby right there in the hallway.
SICKNESS
Two days after the great stampede scare, DG found herself back in the nursery. She'd avoided most of her daily schedule by claiming nausea and planted herself in the rocking chair, letting her mind wander as she stared at the wall.
She could see a prairie, a forest... underwater, a desert, the moon... Maybe something simple, like ABCs, shapes and colors. Did copyright laws extend between sides, she wondered, suddenly picturing Sesame Street.
It needed to be gender unspecific, of course, as she didn't want to subject a boy to pinks and purples and yellows. A girl could take anything, really... but she realized that her attraction to heavy machinery might not be shared with every little girl. Dolls, ponies and flowers, however...
Maybe she should try and do something a little less Other Side and a little more Outer Zone.
The fields outside Finaqua? The snowy peaks of the North? Papay fields in bloom?
'Yes, scare the child from day one with images of Papay. Great idea, there...'
There had to be a way to merge her old life with her new one, letting the baby know just where it came from.
The baby kicked and she smiled, running a hand over her stomach. "What do you think, baby?" She glanced back up to the wall and cocked her head to one side. "Field or forest?" The baby kicked again and DG closed her eyes. A second later, her eyes opened and she stared at the wall for a moment as a smile crept up her face.
"Good idea," she said, smiling again to her stomach.
Three hours later, DG was wearing half a quart of paint and brushing color onto the wall.
In the hallway, Jeb and Cain stood together and watched her work, oblivious to everything else.
ABUNDANCE
The Cain men stand together, watching the younger princess create her masterpiece. She seems to have taken up a habit of chewing on the end of the brush, which is a rather entertaining picture. She's changed so much in the last few annuals, yet remains the same as they day she arrived.
Her return saved more than just the Zone; she gave them a new perspective, showing them that there was good in everyone and everything, even at its worst. She brought families back together and built new ones.
For them, she is the brightest light - as her mother calls her - because she has affected them the most. Two men who had given up on life, subjected to true pain and loss; each with their own demons and stuck in the past.
It was hard, at first, to disassociate Azkadellia the girl from Azkadellia the sorceress. But they managed - for DG - and, soon, were able to see a definite difference between the two individuals. They would never be best friends, but they could live together in peace.
DG had also managed to remind both men that they did have hearts, no matter how broken and buried.
FRECKLES
'...swish and flick,' she thinks with the slightest smile. Cocking her head slightly, DG adjusts the grip on the brush and sweeps up once, then down. The smile grows just a bit more and she reaches for another brush, dips it into the darker paint and presses the brush to the wall, rotating left in a circular motion.
"Wax on..." she barely breathes, then switches the brush to the other hand and picks another spot, just near the first, and rotates right. "Wax off..." She steps back and gives the now-spotted cow a look. Well, it isn't a perfect cow, but she doesn't exactly have one right outside to use for comparison.
Her eyes catch sight of Jeb and Cain standing in the hallway, but she doesn't acknowledge them. They tend to fall into a pattern of standing still, not speaking, and it makes them stronger. And that makes her happy. She's glad that they have been able to patch up their differences and work together.
She figures the baby may have something to do with the over-protectiveness, however. Her mother assures her it's only natural, but her father isn't running around making sure she doesn't stand for too long or that she's eaten her weight in Zone vegetables.
They mean well, she knows.

"Did you apologize?" An eyebrow raises.
"I did nothing to apologize for." Well, he didn't. "Did I?" Now there's doubt.
"Just trying to keep you two from fighting." A chuckle follows.
"We didn't fight. Heated conversation, perhaps..." It was a fight. About names, of all things.
"You'll be fine."
"You think so?" More doubt... or maybe fear.
"There isn't a doubt in my mind." Glitch appears down the hall.
"Cain!" He's waving. Cain grins and pats his son on the back.
"Go. Be attentive... Dad."
