Golden Boys John Tavares/P.K. Subban PG-13, ~4,200 words
For hockeyrarepairs, prompt #35; also, proof that given a choice I will always write about World Juniors. Thanks to cominginside for giving it a once-over with her eagle eyes.
OH WOW THANK YOU. DON'T BE SORRY, THIS COMMENT IS AMAZING AND I AM DRAWING HEARTS AROUND IT AS WE SPEAK.
Writing this took way longer than it should have because I kept getting caught in YouTube loops of highlights from the 2009 WJC and also I watched the "Meet John Tavares and P.K. Subban" video like 20 times just to cackle over the part where they ask about John's goal vs Slokakia and P.K. goes "that was ... not good" HAHAHAHA oh, boys. ANYWAY I am very glad you liked it! I have a LOT of feelings about this incarnation of Team Canada, so it was fun to write! John and P.K. are truly delightful human beings and I'm super-glad I could do them justice for you. :)
Oh gosh, okay so: I love this story and I love your brain and I love everything about these two kids together forever - I love that they bicker non-stop like a married couple but are always the most comfortable together. Also, I love all the kids who pop up in the ensemble piece: best ever!
I want to quote everything back at you, but that might be weird and awkward for us both, so...I'm only going to quote back two bits (even though I loved it all):
“When we were kids, MuchMusic actually showed music. What’s up with all this, like, Gossip Girl, Greek crap? MuchMusic, man.” OH MY GOD. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I have pretty much said the exact same thing to friends, roommates, etc. YES. JUST, YES.
“Hey, so, I dunno if now is the time to say thanks, but.” He shrugs. “You’ve been a really great leader for me here, so. I mean, if I come back next year, I hope I can be like that.”UGH. My non-existent heart. :/ But I really like this part, especially how it demonstrates how people around him see him, and sort of
( ... )
UGH HI I'M SORRY I HAVEN'T EMAILED YOU BACK YET BUT I WAS WRITING THIS + HAVE A FRIEND STAYING WITH ME, I PROMISE THERE IS A HALF-FINISHED DRAFT WITH YOUR NAME ON IT IN MY GMAIL.
Anyway thank you for your kind words, I am very glad you enjoyed it + that you enjoy them, because they are great and I love everything about this team. (It took a lot of restraint for me to not have Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert in every scene of this: the world is lucky I enjoy Tavares and Subban so much that I was able to resist.)
IN CONCLUSION, you are also great and good and I hope your face-puddle does not impede your ability to type because that would make me very sad!!
You can tell from my icon, layout, and the 5.4 tattoo on my wrist that the 2009 World Juniors incarnation of Team Canada is basically my entire reason for breathing. And this was so, so good, and I basically cried through it just for the memories, so I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you writing this and ugh- every time another one of the boys showed up for a cameo my heart pinged a little more, I'm basically incoherent right now but- It's so good, better than my World Juniors stuff and JT stuff but for so long I had nothing to compare it to so this is really special for me. I wish this team was a team forever so I would never have to let them go, but, that isn't happening anyway because I think I mention it at least once a day. Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point- I loved this, I loved your John, your PK was flawless, I love this, I love you.
Oh, wow, thank you so much! Team Canada that year was really a beautiful, beautiful thing. I spent about 80% of my time "writing" this just watching highlights and clips on YouTube and having a lot of feelings about them. I was really excited to write this because I knew some of my favorite boys would get to pop up in the background, and because the story of of that team that year doesn't NEED fabrication: it's gorgeous all on its own. If I could write faster/had more time, I would have loved to make this longer, but I say that every time I write for a challenge or exchange so that's really just wishful thinking on my part, haha. I'm really pleased with how it turned out and I'm really glad that you like it! Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment. <3
It really was- I have a whole slew of private videos on my youtube account of cellphone videos of my TV or laptop documenting like, my favourite Stefan Della Rovere and Colten Teubert moments. I more than liked this, honestly. Tavares/Gagner is really OTP for me but I'm willing to read (and write) John with just about anybody, and you made this work perfectly.
Awww, that's awesome. Colten Teubert is probably my favorite human being on the planet, so I totally understand/support any love for him - same for anyone else on that team, really, but Teubert is my most favorite, haha. I also really like Tavares/ Gagner (those childhood friendships get me every time!) - maybe next time there's a challenge like this I'll get to write about them! :) Thanks so much!!
Aw, thank you! That's super-sweet of you to say. I'm glad you liked it, I had a lot of fun writing it! That team was just full of delightful boys, especially John and P.K., so I'm glad I was able to do them justice!
Okay, so this is pretty much a fucking amazing fic and I completely adore the way you've written these guys. I think my favorite part is that there's one whole scene that's nothing but P.K. telling John he has a stupid orgasm face. Ahahaha. Oh yes, I love dumb boys.
