Filling in the Blanks (5/6)

The next week, they continued to hang out, like they usually did. Sulu still had his judo class to teach and his plants to take care of and Chekov still had his daily shift, manga, and bi-weekly jog. At night, though, in unspoken agreement, Hikaru would end up at Pavel's door and Pavel would be waiting. They'd lay in bed talking until one of them fell asleep. It was, well, not perfect but it was nice. Pavel pointedly ignored the warm feeling in his stomach every time Hikaru showed up at his door.

'This must be my punishment. Falling for my best friend after taking advantage of his hurt brain.'

That night, though, Hikaru didn't show up. Pavel waited until almost ten before he got worried.

"Computer. Please locate Lieutenant Sulu."

The lyrical female voice answered promptly, "Lieutenant Sulu, Hikaru is in his quarters."

Pavel frowned. Was he not feeling well? Had Pavel said something to anger him? He took the turbolift to deck five.

He pressed the door chime and waited. After a few moments of nothing, he pressed it again. For a second he thought maybe Hikaru was simply asleep and felt foolish standing here pressing his door chime over and over, then he heard the lyrical voice of the ships computer, muffled, giving a long answer. Clearly, his friend was not sleeping. 'Maybe he had been in the bathroom.' The foolish feeling swelled again.

He pressed the door chime again. It wasn't answered. This time he knew it wasn't a mistake. His friend was ignoring the door.

~ ~ ~

He felt so stupid. It all made sense. The funny look Pavel had given him when he'd kissed him. He cringed now at the memory. No wonder the younger man had thought his injury was worse than they'd originally expected. He'd sexually harrassed his best friend in front of countless crew in front of the Mess Hall exit.

The chime sounded.

'Please, God, no.' He'd been hanging out at Pavel's every night. He didn't have to guess who it was on the other side of the door, though he hoped he was wrong.

The chime sounded again.

'Go away.' he thought, not wanting to face the object of his affection and be rejected. He knew he was putting off the inevitable, but he didn't care. He wanted to be selfish a little longer. Pretend he hadn't just lost his best friend.

'Maybe it isn't him. Maybe I'm overreacting.'

"Computer. Locate Ensign Chekov."

The answering female voice was loud to his ears and he hoped whoever was trying to reach him had left, but the computer cut that thread of hope. "Ensign Chekov, Pavel Andreievich, is on Deck five, section D, aft. Crew quarters."

He groaned. 'Yup. Outside my door.'

The door chimed again. He ignored it. It chimed yet again. The guy just wasn't getting the hint.

"Go away!"

"Hee-karu! Are you eenjured? Do I need to get ze docter!"

In any other case, Hikaru might've smiled at the return of the Russian's thick accent. It had diminished to only certain words after being around so many non-specific-American accents after the first year and a half, and now only emerged in a few words and names (such as his and Uhura's), when he was drunk, and when he was worried or upset.

He recognized that this was the latter, but he couldn't face him. Not until he had to.

"I'm fine! Just go away!"

Rapid knuckles on the door was his answer.

"Hee-karu! Puhlease. Let me een! Vy are you eegnoring ze door?"

He stood from the chair but didn't move closer to the door.

"Vut are you looking hat? Keep valking. Thees ees none huv your beezness." Another rapid succession of knocks followed. Clearly, Chekov was starting to draw attention to himself and by association, Sulu.

'Great. More gossip. Perfect.'

He strode over to the door and pressed in his code to unlock it. It slid open to reveal a disheveled and agitated Chekov. He looked past him and jabbed a thumb through the air. "Come on, people. Move along." The onlookers started walking away slowly, hoping to see more.

"Come on in." He moved aside, sealing his fate.
