these are the familiar moments we share

he's missed this so much, the familiar comfort of light banter with his best friend.
s. it's hollywood bowl 2008!!
a/n. this was the result of staring at
this picture for hours; hyuk & su in the same vicinity make me incredibly flaily giggly happy. this is mostly gen/bff fic though. ♥ also, one day, i swear, i will shake off this acquired present tense habit. that one day is sadly not today. also, finished it while lucky bitches who to attend hb were most likely watching super junior (t + yeh) perform live. ;_; thanks, as usual, to
kikiam for the quick beta.
d. i do not know, nor am i affiliated with, hyukjae, junsu, super junior, dbsk, or sm entertainment. none of the events depicted in this story happened, or happened exactly as i wrote them.

When Eeteuk first tells Hyukjae that they're traveling with Dong Bang Shin Ki on the way to Hollywood Bowl, his eyes are a little shiny and he can barely contain his excitement:
"Oh? Really? Huh, how about that," he tries to be nonchalant about it anyway.
Eeteuk just smiles and rolls his eyes, because it's not like Hyukjae is really convincing anyone.

The day of the flight itself, schedule is tight and Hyukjae's barely had any free time in the last 36 hours. There isn't even enough time to change clothes in between Sukira and going to the airport, but he's fully awake anyway. Fully awake, all smiles, and bursting with energy - which he's trying hard to hide, but failing even harder at doing so.
They meet DBSK at the airport and Junsu's first words to him are,
"Dude what is that manly bag?!"
"Shut up. Like you haven't had your fair share of gay," Hyukjae rolls his eyes, a grin beginning to tug at his lips, "besides, I happen to like it."
"And the pink? Did you raid Sungmin's closet or something?"
"Hey I heard that!" Sungmin says, turning to them, "I'll have you know, I am slowly but successfully weaning myself off of pink."
Then Junsu giggles, and Hyukjae giggles right back, and for a split second it's like they're little boys again, teasing Sungmin (or Donghae, or Jungsu-hyung, or just whoever happens to be hanging out with the two of them for the day), and then they're hugging, and for a few long seconds, neither wants to let go.
"You're starting to get too skinny," Hyukjae retorts, when they finally pull apart, "are you eating well?"
"Yes mother," it's Junsu's turn to roll his eyes, "And how about that, you still look like a monkey!"
Hyukjae lets the comment slide and just gives Junsu a light punch on the shoulder - he's missed this so much, the familiar comfort of light banter with his best friend.
Their assigned seats on the plane aren't next to each other, but neither even has to ask. Yoochun readily exchanges his ticket with Hyukjae.
"He misses you," Yoochun shrugs, "Can't fucking stop talking about you."
"Not true!" Junsu exclaims, but he sounds more embarrassed than outraged, and probably precisely because what Yoochun just said is very embarrassingly true.
Hyukjae just laughs as he graciously accepts the swap.
"Of course you miss me, idiot," he grins, "I'm so great, I'd probably miss me too."

The travel is long, and they're both so tired, but the first how many hours of the flight, while everyone else is trying to get in as much shut-eye as possible, the two of them talking non-stop in hushed tones, talking like there's no way they'll run out of things to talk about, talking like it's time they're running out of instead of energy.
When exhaustion finally starts catching up though, Junsu's the first one to close his eyes and start dozing off. Hyukjae stays awake, silently staring at Junsu, like he still can't believe they're there, together.
Five minutes of this, Junsu opens an eye and mutters, "You idiot, get some rest. Once we land, it'll be non-stop schedule again."
"Yes mother," Hyukjae returns Junsu's own words to him, unable to wipe a very stupid smile off of his face.

It is non-stop schedule the moment they get off the plane. Non-stop schedule and twenty-four hour excitement, and the fangirls are as giddy in America as they are in Korea. The sad truth is, they might be in the same city, the same place, but they still barely get to spend time together anyway. Junsu's schedule matches with the rest of DBSK, and Hyukjae has Super Junior's schedule. They might cross at times, but not always, and at the back of his mind, Hyukjae thinks maybe this is actually just a little bit harder. His best friend is right there, right there with him, but he misses him more than ever.
It hurts, but when Hyukjae goes on stage with Super Junior, and there's a sea of blue, and the screams of fans are enough to drown him, so for a short while he actually forgets about the unfairness of not being able to be on stage with his best friend. Performing never stops being so exhilarating and he loves it.
He knows Junsu probably feels the same every time there's a blanket of red in the audience, and they've both worked so hard to get to where they are now. He's so proud of Junsu, and Junsu's proud smile is enough for him to know that it goes both ways. They are where they are now because of each other and they both know it, even though they'd never really say it out loud to each other's faces.

After the concert, there is a little afterparty, which is cut short from the fact that everyone is exhausted, and the fact they're all flying back to Korea in a couple of hours anyway. Hyukjae and Junsu stay behind though, because they're them, and they'd take any time they can spend together.
"Remember that time when-" Junsu starts saying, but Hyukjae cuts him off.
"We're always talking about what used to be, what we did then, etc. etc."
"Huh?" Junsu looks confused.
"Like we don't have new memories anymore," Hyukjae says, a blank expression on his face.
There's a weird uncomfortable silence for a minute or two, until Junsu says, "We should go on a vacation together one of these days."
"What? We're hardly ever in the same country nowadays!" Hyukjae is laughing, but there's a bitter ring to it.
"That's why I said one of these days. You never listen to me you stupid monkey!" Junsu grins, "But don't you think it'll be something to look forward to?"
Junsu's smile is infectious, and Hyukjae finds a genuine smile tugging at the corner of his lips, "Yeah, I guess."
"Now stop being so damn dramatic!" Junsu says, hitting him lightly on the arm, "We're here together now, aren't we?"
"Right."
And they spend the rest of the night talking about what used to be ("Remember that time we pranked Donghae, and Yunho reprimanded us and..." "That number we did on Jungsu-hyung during that one Valentines Day was priceless though!"), what is ("How are Donghae and the others in China?" "Oh you know, there's a lot of drama, but they're pretty amazing over there. I miss him, though. We miss all of them."), and what can eventually be ("So, for this proposed vacation of yours, where do you want to go?" "Europe? You've never been to Paris, right?" "But doesn't this two-man vacation thing sound really gay?" "Riiiiiight."), and somewhere along the conversation Hyukjae realises that more than the melancholy of constantly missing his best friend, there's the happiness of having his best friend in his life, and the occasional contentment of just being with Junsu like this, and maybe right now that's more than enough.
