dont be a victim!

Last Tuesday, January 5 at 1:02 p.m., I received a call from a person named Raffy (company mobile number: 0917-5023723). He told me that he was working for a healthcare company in Ortigas (I already forgot the name of the company but my first impression was that it might be a new one and therefore not as established as United Laboratories, Novartis, Pfizer, and the like.) and got my name and contact details from Miriam College. He offered me training in HR with them before absorbing me in their company.

The offer seemed too good to be true, considering that I never heard of the company before. The background sounded not from an office but from a cafeteria or carinderia because of the noise. It was also unthinkable because the guy seemed to be sitting next to a woman who said nothing but vulgar words (ex. “Masama talaga ugali ng bruhang ‘yun! P.I niyang ____ siya! Oh, ayusin mo ‘yan, ha.”). I thought that perhaps it was still their lunch break, but why would he sit next to that woman while he was talking to me?

It didn’t seem right but I told Raffy I might be interested so to get further information. He asked me to meet him at 3:30 p.m. at 15th floor, Octagon Building (near BDO), San Miguel Avenue. Later, I asked if I needed to bring my curriculum vitae and transcript with me but he said there was no need for that at the moment and instead advised me to be in corporate attire.

Alarmed, I confided the offer with Mooch Alegre (a classmate and friend) later in the evening, thinking that she, too also received a call from Raffy since I was “recommended by Miriam”. She then told me that our friend and classmates, Marilyn Silang and Jhoanna Christine Chua (AB Psychology, Batch 2009) also had a similar experience before. Accordingly, she texted Mari to ask if that was the same company that reached her before. Mari then confirmed it was. She said that she and Jheysi went to the company for an interview but when they arrived, they were both surprised to discover that it was a pyramiding scam. Without hesitation, Jheysi firmly said “no” while Mari said she’ll think about it but didn’t reach the guy eventually.

Had it not been for my friends, I might have already fallen into that fraudulent transaction. I am sharing you this to warn you because this could also happen to you or to your friends.

Please spread the word. Thank you very much!

Yours truly,
Ciara May Tan
