Title: Not just a game

Pairing: KyuMin, Highschool!AU

Summary: The love story of Cho Kyuhyun.

A/N: This is a sequel/prequel (you can look at it from both sides really, if that makes sense ^_^U) to Unrequited Love. It's the KyuMin side to the YooSu story, so you can read it by itself. And although I didn’t really mention it in Unrequited Love, the school that they attend will be an all boys’ school.

+

How Cho Kyuhyun, the schools all-star president, came to fall head over heels for Lee Sungmin.

+

“And it is my pleasure to introduce you to this years school president, Cho Kyuhyun.” The headmaster says, a proud smile on his lips as he stand back from the podium and claps in the direction of the said student.

Kyuhyun puts on a small smile and stands. He turns and bows once to the large crowd of students and teachers in the small auditorium. He frowns inwardly when there’s a brief moment of silence, a quiet shockwave resounding through the room. But then all at once, everyone’s gaping jaws close and they start to clap. Slightly baffled, Kyuhyun slides back into his seat and tries to ignore the heated gazes he feels boring into the back of his head.

‘This is going to a long school year…’

+

“President, I was just wondering about the spring festival that’s coming up this weekend-“

“We already talked about that yesterday, why are you bringing it up again?” Kyuhyun says, chuckling. The school council secretary turns bright pink as he just bites his bottom lip and bows in apology. Kyuhyun knew that the only reason the secretary is speaking to him is to just speak to him. He, the school president, knew that he was popular with the students and some teachers, and knew that people adored him.

And he hated it…

“President, the meeting with the clubs is starting in 10 minutes.” Ryeowook says, clipboard in hand and pushing up his glasses.

“Wookie,” Kyuhyun pouts, “Of all people, do you have to call me ‘President’ too?”

Ryeowook sighs and thanks the Lord that nobody else is in the student council room other then him and Kyuhyun. “Honestly Kyuhyun, you are the school president. Man, if the people knew the true you, I wonder if you’ll still have admirers.” Ryeowook muses, taking off his glasses and cleaning them.

Kyuhyun shrugs his shoulders and smirks at the vice-president and friend of 10 years. “I’m honestly surprised at how many people think that I’m this perfect ‘goody-goody’.” Kyuhyun chuckles when Ryeowook scoffs.

“You’re the antonym of ‘perfection’ and ‘goody-goody’.” The shorter of the two states, “Mr. Video Game addict and ‘of-sarcastic-persona’.”

Kyuhyun just rubs his chin and grins, amused. “I wonder why they think I’m so good…”

Ryeowook rolls his eyes. “It’s just because you can pull off these horrid uniforms while nobody else can.” He picks at the hem of his school jacket.

Kyuhyun raises an eyebrow. “So? Yesung can too.”

A sly grin forms on Ryeowook’s lips. “That he can… so very well.”

Kyuhyun sticks his tongue out and slaps his friend’s arm. “Stop thinking perverted things in front of me. Just thinking about having the two of you making lovey-dovey eyes at each other all through this meeting is enough to make me hurl.”

Ryeowook scowls as he and Kyuhyun march down the hallway towards the meeting room. “Your flies open dear president.” Ryeowook hisses, following slightly behind Kyuhyun. The school president rolls his eyes and doesn’t falter. “Nice try.”

The vice-president shrugs. “It was worth a shot.”

Kyuhyun controls his chuckles as the meeting room door opens. The 20 or so club members automatically stand and smile like fools as Kyuhyun moves to the head of the table. He silently muses as how when he sits, they follow like loyal dogs. “So, everyone here?” He smiles when a couple of the students nod their dumbstruck heads. “Good, so-“

Then the door suddenly bursts open and a fellow, dressed in the school’s kendo uniform, rushes in. His hair slick with sweat and cheeks flushed from running.

“Am I late?” He says, a slow smile forming as his tongue pokes out to lick his lips. Kyuhyun’s body tenses as his heart strangely beats stronger then normal.

Then Yesung, the stand-in for the school’s music department, motions for the boy to take a seat next to him.

“Who is that?” Kyuhyun whispers so that only Ryeowook will hear.

“Lee Sungmin, sophomore, Kendo Club President.” Ryeowook says, not missing a beat to answer. Sometimes, it hits Kyuhyun that maybe Ryeowook should’ve been the school president, and not himself, since the other male has the qualities that Kyuhyun lacks.

“Well, now that everyone is here, let’s get started.” Kyuhyun says. “We’re here to discuss the event for this weekends spring festival and vote for the top games and houses. As club president’s it is your duty to follow the orders we are about to lay down today and make sure your club members do as-“

“Question.”

Kyuhyun’s head snaps toward the speaker, it was unusual for someone to interrupt Kyuhyun when he was speaking. It was also very unusual for a student to be frowning at him with distaste. Holding back the surprise, Kyuhyun smiles and nods. “Yes?”

Sungmin puts down his hand and crosses his arms, a light frown marring his handsome face. “I’m assuming that this spring festival will be like all the other ones?”

Kyuhyun frowns, “Why, yes of course. It is the school spring festiva-“

“No no no. I’m trying to say that I hope this festival will be more… different.” Sungmin says, interrupting the president, again, and oblivious to the shocked expressions painting around the room.

“Whatever do you mean?” Kyuhyun says, eyes curious and brows raised. He almost chokes when Sungmin gives him a bright smile. Never has he seen such a beautiful smile, or seen such delectable lips.

“Every year the spring festival is one of the most entertaining and exciting things to happen at our school. And every year it’s the same.” Sungmin says, twinkling eyes holding Kyuhyun’s gaze. “So I propose that this year be a bit different, you know, spice things up a bit.”

“That’s dumb! Some things are school tradition that we must do!” One person shouts, obviously not liking the idea.

Sungmin raises an eyebrow and a small grin tugs at his lips. “Yeah, and it’s also school tradition to make all the students look like fags in those ugly uniforms.” He waves a hand around the room and chuckles. “Yet, while we can’t do anything about these hideous uniforms, we can at least change the festival around a bit.”

Before anyone can retort to Sungmin’s statement, Kyuhyun speaks, an amused smile gracing his lips as his eyes only focus on this bright Kendo President. “And what do you propose?” He leans forward on his elbows. “Sungmin?”

Kyuhyun’s heart skips a beat at the brilliant smile Sungmin gives him, and almost forgets how to breath when he winks at him.

+

“Sungmin… is that the school president?” Yunho whispers, eyes wide and blinking as he points to the figure standing by the outside entrance to the gym.

Sungmin takes off his men, the kendo mask, and brushes away the thin layer of sweat glistening on his forehead. “Yeah, it is. Why is he here?” He frowns, taking cautious steps towards the man. He clicks his tongue and gives a good whack on the heads to the gaping members staring obviously at Kyuhyun. “Anyone slacks off, the entire team is running!” Sungmin yells, annoyed at how the appearance of one certain male can affect his entire team.

“You sure run your team hard.” Kyuhyun comments, smiling pleasantly as Sungmin approaches him. His smile widens when Sungmin stands before him, eyebrows raised and arms crossed.

“What did my team do to have you grace us with your presence?” Sungmin says, clearly wanting a good explanation why their practice was disturbed.

Kyuhyun pushes himself off the wall he was leaning on and comes to stand in front of Sungmin. He notes the clear difference in height and smirks when Sungmin visibly jumps at the sudden closeness. He tilts his head to the side and puts his hands in his back pockets. “Not what your team did, but what you did.”

Sungmin frowns. “Excuse me?”

Kyuhyun chuckles and resists the urge to ruffle the boy’s hair. “Your ideas of last weeks spring festival were a hit. Students loved it and asked for something like this for the summer celebration.”

Kyuhyun tries to deny it, but it was obvious that Sungmin’s smile affected him terribly. Even if he didn’t show it on the outside.

“Really?” Sungmin says, eyes twinkling. He grins. “I told you that it would’ve been nice to spice things up a bit.”

Kyuhyun chuckles. “That you did.”

Then an idea crosses his mind. From their first encounter at the meeting, Sungmin clearly showed that Kyuhyun’s charms had no affect on him. Kyuhyun smirks inwardly and decides to try some flirting moves that make people weak-kneed in seconds.

He tilts his head to the side slightly and holds Sungmin’s gaze as he steps closer to the shorter male. He brings a hand up, hovering over Sungmin’s cheek as his lips twitch up into a small grin. He cheers inwardly when Sungmin flinches and starts to color a pretty pink. But as Kyuhyun thinks that he won, Sungmin suddenly slaps Kyuhyun’s hand away and glowers at him.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Sungmin hisses, eyes narrowing. He spreads his legs and stands in a protective stands as he looks up at Kyuhyun with such defiance, it sends a shudder coursing through the presidents body.

While completely shocked and startled inside, Kyuhyun simply puts on a languid smile and takes a step back. “Nothing.” He states. He gives Sungmin a wink and stares at Sungmin with challenging eyes. “I’ll see you around. Sungmin.”

Kyuhyun turns on his heels and marches out of the gym, chuckling silently at the surprised expression flickering past Sungmin’s face. He whistles and greets random students he has never met as he crosses the school field.

Kyuhyun likes challenges, and if anything, this Lee Sungmin was his biggest challenge yet.

+

“Why do you follow me around? Don’t you have, I don’t know, president things to attend to?” Sungmin growls, frowning across the wooden table in the library.

Kyuhyun puts his hand under his chin and leans against the table on his elbows. He smiles and raises an amused eyebrow. “Shhh, this is a library Sungmin.” He whispers, placing a finger against his lips. He holds back a chuckle when Sungmin gives him a furious glare.

For 3 weeks, Kyuhyun has been following him everywhere. Starting random conversations, giving him food, even letting him rest in the student council office when he felt like sleeping. But the question that befuddles Sungmin is why the sexy school president is so keen on talking to him.

“I’m trying to study, leave me alone.” Sungmin hisses, ignoring the stares he and Kyuhyun are getting from nearby students. Sungmin could feel the envy, anger and confusion in the air. It was almost too much.

“Question 5 is wrong. It should be 5.82%” Kyuhyun comments, bored and watching Sungmin with a curious gaze.

Sungmin puffs out his cheeks and curses mentally. Kyuhyun was right.

“Who is that with the president?”

“I think it’s the kendo club president.”

“Lee Sungmin?”

“I don’t know his name.”

“Why are they so close?”

“Oh my gosh, he just touched his hand!”

“What are they doing?”

Sungmin’s grip on his pencil tightens. He looks up from his work and glares around the room, daring people to speak again. The room immediately hushes up, but then start again as Sungmin turns back around.

“Careful, you’re going to hurt yourself.” Kyuhyun says, hints of amusement in his voice as he gently unwraps Sungmin’s fingers around the pencil. Sparks travel up Sungmin’s arm as Kyuhyun touches him. He gulps and draws back his hand hastily, missing the triumphant grin on Kyuhyun’s face.

“I’m out of here.” Sungmin mutters, frowning. He glares at Kyuhyun, president or not, Sungmin was allowed to speak his thoughts. “Stay where you are if you know what is good for you.” He whispers, low and dangerous.

Kyuhyun simply chuckles and pokes Sungmin forehead. The shorter of the two pouts and rubs his forehead, before grabbing his things and marching out of the library.

“What do you want?!” Sungmin mutters, quickening his pace when Kyuhyun follows. Suddenly, he finds strong fingers wrapping around his wrist, stopping him in his tracks.

“Go out with me.” Kyuhyun whispers, standing behind him and linking their hands together. Sungmin’s face heats up as he wiggles his hand out of Kyuhyun’s grasp. He steps away and looks around the empty hallway. Why is it that during the times when Sungmin wants people to be around, nobody is here?

“Why?” Sungmin says, eyes narrowing and willing his heart to calm.

“Because.” Kyuhyun says, obviously enjoying everything.

“Just because?” Sungmin says, baffled and annoyed. “If you think I’m some easy-going pushover or like those clones that are in love with you, you are highly mistaken!”

Kyuhyun stands there, eyes unwavering and showing no signs of emotion. “I never said you were.” He gently whispers. His eyes soften and admiration shines in those dark orbs. “You’re different from the rest of the students. And I like people who are different.”

Sungmin tries, really tries, to break away from Kyuhyun’s heated gaze, but he fails miserably. Instead, he stays rooted to the ground when Kyuhyun closes the small gap between them and holds his breath when the taller male runs feather touches up his arm.

“S-stop,” Sungmin breathes, eyes suddenly watering, “please.” He closes his eyes, the books and bag in his arms falling to the ground as a tear rolls down his flushed cheeks.

Kyuhyun’s hand stops, fingers stretched to caress the soft cheek and wipe away that heart-wrenching teardrop. “Why?” He questions. His chest tightens when Sungmin slowly opens his lids and glossy eyes stare into his. This is when he realizes that it is no longer just a game of winning Sungmin’s adoration. Instead it’s a battle to win Sungmin’s heart.

“Don’t… I don’t want to get hurt.” Sungmin murmurs, grabbing his things clumsily from the ground and dashing down the hallway.

Kyuhyun stands there, a feeling of utmost hurt and uncertainty spreading through him. His hand drops to his side and rolls into a fist. ‘Lee Sungmin… what have you done to me to have me fallen so deeply for you?’ He stares out the hallway windows, lost in thought.

+

“Ryeowook, Yesung knows Sungmin, right?” Kyuhyun asks, lounging on the couch of the council room.

The vice president looks up from the paper he’s reading with blinking eyes. “Ye-ah. Why do you ask?”

Kyuhyun lays unmoving, staring up at the ceiling with deep concentration. For the past week, Sungmin has been successfully avoiding him, coming to school as the bell rings for class, leaving for home right when the day ends. Even at Kendo practice, he quickly starts and hastily ends, ignoring the questions and worry his members are giving him. For Kyuhyun, the entire week was torture and unfocused. The thought of Sungmin avoiding him and ignoring him hurt deeply, and affected his role as the student council president.

“Can you get Yesung to relay a message to Sungmin for me?” Kyuhyun says, suddenly sitting upright and staring at his friend with hope.

Ryeowook frowns. “Sure I can. But why do you-“

“Just do it for me without any questions.” Kyuhyun interrupts, “please?”

Staring at his friend with confusion, the fire of determination and hope strong in Kyuhyun’s eyes, Ryeowook sighs and nods. “Yeah, sure. What do you want me to get him to say?”

Kyuhyun brightens and sits forward on the edge of the couch. “Okay, get him to…”

+

“Sungmin! Wait, I have something to tell you!” Yesung calls, running up to the said male. He catches his breath as Sungmin stops in his tracks and turns towards the elder.

“Go to the school roof, something important is waiting for you there.” Yesung says, reciting what Ryeowook wanted him to tell Sungmin.

The young martial artist frowns and purses his lips. He turns his head to the school roof in curiosity. “Who’s this message from?” He asks, eyes narrowing in suspicion.

Yesung shrugs. “I don’t know, whole bunch of people were relaying the message. I was going to get Donghae to tell you, but because I saw you before I saw him, I just told you… yeah.” He says, trailing off and slowly walking backwards. “Well, go to the rooftop, I have band practice.” Waving goodbye, Yesung disappears around the corner of the building as Sungmin continues to just stare at the rooftop of the school with doubt and curiosity.

Sighing, his feet take reluctant steps into the school.

+

“Let. Me. Go.” Sungmin mutters, avoiding Kyuhyun’s smoldering gaze and looking down at his shoes, he flexes his arms and blinks in surprise at how strong Kyuhyun is. He was pinned against the door that leads to the roof from the stairs, his wrists on either side of his head and Kyuhyun’s warm body pressed very close to his.

A passing wind whips by, flapping their uniforms and ruffling their hair.

“No.” Kyuhyun states defiantly, eyes blazing with unspoken emotions. “I have many questions for you Lee Sungmin, the main one being, why are you avoiding me?”

Sungmin squirms, desperately wanting to get away from this model before him, but then gasps when Kyuhyun presses closer to him. “I-I wasn’t a-avoiding you.” He stutters, cursing himself inwardly for his weak words and voice.

“Sungmin,” Kyuhyun whispers, lowering his head and locking eyes with the elder, “why do you hate me so?”

Sungmin, blinking furiously with confusion and shock, gapes. “What? Since when did I say I hated you? I don’t hate you! In fact I-“ Quickly, Sungmin shuts his mouth and prays that Kyuhyun won’t press further on his words. Unfortunately, his prayer wasn’t heard.

“In fact what?” Kyuhyun says, the corner of his lips tugging up into a curious smile. The grip on Sungmin’s wrist lessens as his hands slowly travel down the arm.

“In fact nothing. Never mind.” Sungmin mutters, cheeks painting a dark pink. He swears that he will hurt Yesung after he survives this. “Just let me g-“ His eyes widen as a warm pair of lips against his cuts off his words.

His body tenses, but then relaxes as Kyuhyun’s lips mold carefully against his. Peppermint and fresh pine fills his senses as Sungmin’s body involuntarily presses closer to Kyuhyun and his arms come around Kyuhyun’s neck to deepen the kiss.

They slowly break apart to catch their breaths; Sungmin flushes a bright red and tries to get away, only to be slammed against the door behind him with Kyuhyun’s arms on his hips.

“I want you.” Kyuhyun whispers, lips brushing against Sungmin’s cheek. “You make me crave your touches and your attention like nobody else. I… I think I love you.” He pulls back to stare into Sungmin’s shocked eyes.

“No… no you can’t love me.” Sungmin murmurs, shaking his head slightly as his eyes stay staring into Kyuhyun’s sincere orbs. “You… you’re this perfect being… you can’t love someone like me.” Sungmin’s chest heaves with pain as each word escapes his lips.

“I can love whomever I want, thank you very much.” Kyuhyun retorts, sighing and pressing his forehead against Sungmin’s. An amused smile tugs at his lips. “And I’m not all that perfect once you get to know me.”

Sungmin continues to shake his head. “Either way, it doesn’t matter. You’re looked as a role model, to everyone. If I’m seen with you like that… they’ll despise me. Everyone loves you… even me. I don’t think it’s fair to people-“

“Stop,” Kyuhyun says, putting a finger on Sungmin’s lips. “You’re babbling and making no sense whatsoever.” His eyes soften as he places his lips against Sungmin’s once again, time stopping as the short moment of pure bliss passes. “I’m obliged to be happy too, you know. And you make me feel things that I’ve never felt before, which says something because I’m not the ‘emotionally-driven’ person, if you know what I mean.”

Sungmin bites his bottom lip in thought, another breeze passing by them. “You really like me?” He asks timidly, avoiding eye contact.

Kyuhyun smiles and tilts Sungmin’s chin up to face him. His dark eyes glow with fondness as Sungmin gulps in anticipation. “I’m going with my heart, and it’s telling me that I love you.” A hear melting graces his lips as Sungmin’s legs suddenly feel very weak and his mind suddenly feels very aware of the closeness of their bodies.

“I… I like you too.” Sungmin confesses. “But… if the other students find out about you… and me…” He trails off, unsure. Are they together now?

“They can go and do whatever. If they lay a finger on you because of my affection to you, then I’ll hunt them down - president or not, I’m allowed to love whoever.” He shrugs. “Also, I could care less if I lose my title of student council president.”

Sungmin’s eyes widen. “What? Why?”

Kyuhyun smirks, looking incredibly sexy in Sungmin’s eyes. “As I said before, I’m not all that perfect as you think I am.”

“Then good.” Sungmin murmurs, hands playing with the hem of Kyuhyun’s jacket. “It’ll make me feel better.”

Kyuhyun chuckles. “So… we’re together now?” He asks, eyes dark and alluring.

Sungmin blinks and nods, eyes unfocused as if under a spell. “I-I think so.”

Laughing, Kyuhyun places a short, chaste kiss and hugs Sungmin close to him - practically suffocating the smaller male.

“I feel so… content.” Kyuhyun sighs, breathing in Sungmin scent. A ripple of want travels through his body.

Sungmin hums in agreement and snuggles further into the warm embrace. “If someone harasses me about us… I have your permission to do something to get them to leave me alone right?” He asks, arms wrapping around Kyuhyun’s neck.

Kyuhyun raises an eyebrow. “What are you going to do?” He chuckles when Sungmin’s eyes shine with mischief and excitement. “Fine. As long as it’s nothing to leave them permanently injured.”

“Of course.” Sungmin says. “And… can we try to keep our relationship low? I don’t want a group of personal anti-Sungmin fans following me around everywhere.”

Kyuhyun’s eyes soften. “Anything you wish,” he smiles leaning down to capture Sungmin’s lips for an emotion-filled, passionate kiss.
