The day couldn't have been more beautiful and Jaye was so grateful just to be a part of such a lovely world that she could have sung about it. Sadly, she found she didn't know very many happy songs, not fitting enough for her mood, so she contented herself with humming cheerfully as she walked along the boardwalk to the Compound. She lived so far ( Read more... )

The day couldn't have been more of a disaster if it had come wrapped in explosive paper, and Lloyd wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole someplace and hide out until the shitstorm clouds cleared out. But he couldn't. Not with juvenile delinquent Cuthbert Nogood on the loose. No, Lloyd had to stick around, make sure nobody got shanked, be the responsible one.

Maybe some of that opposite mojo was rubbing off on him, too.

He allowed himself a cautious glimmer of hope when he spotted Jaye, but it turned into outright suspicion when he realized that was picking flowers, a sure warning sign if there ever was one.

And was that humming? Cheerful humming?

Oh, Christ Al-fucking-mighty.

Maybe he could run. Split before she even noticed he was there. Lloyd send frantic looks to his sides, desperately looking for an escape route.

But Jaye was looking here, there and everywhere, wanting to take in every ounce of beauty that surrounded her. Why did she hole up in her trailer so often? Why didn't she explore more and enjoy the special opportunity she had in this life?

And then she saw Lloyd. She saw Lloyd and... well... her heart swelled.

The strength of her feelings overwhelmed her for a moment, but she didn't let them frighten or embarrass her. There was no shame in how she felt, in how much she loved his company, in how she dreamed about his face. No shame and no reason to hide it.

"Lloyd!" she cried brightly, waving her hand. She gathered the flowers into the crook of one arm and skipped forward with light steps until she could reach him, slip an arm around his neck and rise up on her toes to press a kiss to his cheek. "It's so good to see you. How are you? Are you having a good day? I hope you are, because I am."

Aw shit. Lloyd got a deer in the headlights look to him, but forgot to move. He bet the deer were that way, too -- they just succumbed to their destiny, and hoped it would turn out short and painless.

Lloyd, however, had no so such hopes.

The kiss painted his face a dubious shade of pink. Jaye had gotten into some perky Disney groove, and somehow it was even more disturbing than Charlie from Slutsville or Bert-turned-Slick.

"I-I'm all right, I guess," he said, staring at her dumbly. "Today's been kind of weird, actually." Not that Jaye would know; she was high as a kite, thanks to island mojo.

"Weird?" she echoed, a puzzled tilt to her head. The smile immediately dropped from her face and her eyes went wide with attentive concern. "I'm sorry to hear that." And, frighteningly enough, it sounded as though she really was.

Careful of the delicate flowers, Jaye slipped her arm through Lloyd's and tried to cheer him up with an encouraging smile. "You should tell me all about it while we walk to the Compound. Talking through your problems always helps. And then, maybe I can make you a nice cup of tea and you can relax a little. Wouldn't that be nice?"
