“Ruka…what is this?” Niya couldn’t stand the mystery any longer; the box held gingerly in the palm of his hand made little sense. Or, rather, he knew that he was holding a small amount of extremely expensive designer chocolate. What he didn’t know was why.
The drummer, in true Ruka fashion, shrugged. “It’s Valentine’s Day.” How very unhelpful, and he didn’t seem interested in elaborating. A few taps on the drum and an averted gaze told Niya that the discussion of his gift was over in Ruka’s mind. He couldn’t be sure if it was worth pursuing the matter when his friend wasn’t in the mood to be forthcoming.
“Well, yeah, but…” Niya faltered, looking down at the molded rose patterns at the crown of each candy. He sighed, and tried to expound on his confusion, trailing off in the end. “I guess I’m just not sure why you’re giving this to me. We don’t usually give each other stuff on holidays….”
Ruka scratched his chin, looking sidelong towards the wall past Niya's arm rather than meeting his eyes. “You know what it means,” he said.
“No, I really don’t-“ Niya stopped, and a niggling idea in the back of his mind made itself uncomfortably known. With Ruka’s odd mannerisms, it made perfect sense that he would admit his interest in such a way. “…Right.” Their eyes finally met, though only briefly as Ruka looked away again after a few meager seconds.
